For those not in the know who might feel that my workings are a little 'unusual', I am 71, just getting over breast cancer, and heart problems caused by the chemotherapy drugs, so my daily energy levels are low at best. My daily intake of 7 different drugs makes me rattle when I walk! Better...

That's another job I have to sort out, putting a towbar back on the Rangie. I'll look in on that thread, see if I can be of any help. Peter

My current task, building driver boards for 3-phase battery chargers. I design the systems and do the board design/layout, and I get to build them as well! :) Peter

Bit of an update: Work and weather has stopped too much being done, every time I've been out, it has rained within half an hour, including tonight when I got out at 5pm and had to pack in at 5.40 as it lashed it down. On a more positive note, I have replaced all of the hose clips with new...

    P38 Diesel timing cover

Compared with the Swedish trucks, body panel preparation and protection was pretty poor in the UK. Scania would ship their chassis-cabs with a base paint coat that was good enough to run with, although most operators would paint in their colours. Pro-Motor had a guy in to hand-paint their cabs...

TM was the 1970's tractor, 500 series or the Detroit Diesel V6 and V8 engines. Never worked on them, but got woken up most mornings by them when we lived close to the big Vauxhall trailer park at the Luton factory. Peter

I thing it was a Turner or Eaton box on the KM? 381 or 466 engine, 16 tonner. Nicer version of the TK and popular for tipper work as much more rugged than the smaller TK. Peter

We rarely overhauled 330's, it was cheaper and quicker to fit a factory short engine and swap everything over. A lot of the time taken on the TK was taking the cab off, the Scanias had the luxury of a decent hydraulic tilt cab. Peter

We had the figure available to us as 'factory' mechanics, but the guy in the street wouldn't know without asking a dealer. As far as Bedford engines went, it was just as quick to pull the intermediate gear out and retime the engine. Peter

Our D2 V8 has just started leaking from the rocker covers after 60k miles. We have a big job on at the factory now so time on the Rangie is going to be tight for a few days. Coil packs all tight and connected up, IACV in place but the plastic inlet pipe and dampers need a good washing out...

Engines like the Perkins, Bedford 220/330/381 and 466 all had intermediate gears twixt crankshaft and camshaft/pump. While indeed the components came in sync every two turns, the timing marks took quite a few turns to come round and line up. Applies to other engines too, but those and Scania...

A Saga of Disco 2, rust, dealers and things.......

Heartbreaking to have your Lady diagnosed like that, hope it doesn't go downhill too quickly for her. The D2 chassis corrosion is well known, and I'd also be looking at that MOT to see if it was false. Welding a new rear quarter chassis isn't such a huge job, we are about to do our '99 D2 V8...

Almost there! Got to wait for the multi-hose that goes twixt the thermostat and heater and header tank, but the rest of the engine is pretty much complete. Bought new stainless hose clips to replace the spring clips originally fitted. They work OK and maintain pressure on the hose, but they...

'Lost' hose wasn't ordered! my bad. Mind you, £60+ for a composite heater hose is going some: PCH000910. Ordered that this morning, sun is out so hopefully can get some time in today, in between work calls. Peter

On the case.... Decided to change both idler pulley bearings, we had new ones on the shelf for the Discoveries, one benefit of running the same engine. Next job is to pull the thermostat and old hoses out, then once the new stuff is in place I can refit the pulleys and fan etc. Then the top...

More work done today, rocker covers fitted, new plastic water pipes from header to radiator and to throttle body heater. Throttle body heater is a new one, waiting for the throttle body istself to come back from being skimmed. Upper inlet manifold is on, got to hook up the plug leads in place...

Lots of bits and pieces today, nothing worthy of a shot, got both rocker covers set up with the new gaskets tacked on with a bit of RTV and left overnight with some weight on them, gaskets were slightly small through shrinkage of the material, and springing off the covers at a touch. Checked...
