    Engine oil Discovery 1

Are we talking about a V8? or Diseasel? Either way: 5w-40 will flow better when cold and be about the same when at 100C. Any driving you do below 100C oil temp, the 5W will give microscopically better economy than a 10W. Side-note: On my Mrs old BMW that was used for multiple short trips on the...

Really confused - R380 gearbox issues on Discovery 2

Just to be clear/pedantic - the spigot bush is in the end of the crank and is what stops the input shaft waggling around at the front end. Replacing all the other flywheel and clutch components doesn't change the bush - It might pay to check very specifically that it was done... but EVERY garage...

    Scored myself a new job

Ooof, it's mostly off season and you're already having "fun" 🤣 Nothing like the pressure of a waiting customer to bypass the procrastination process!

    Scored myself a new job

I *think* I saw one of your vans yesterday... the Ambo it basically changed lanes into, slowed down quick enough to avoid a collision 🤣 I'm assuming they were following the SatNav prompts, as a couple of Kms ahead the council roading morons force everyone into a single lane to continue on the...

    Cheap Landy

There's no such thing as a cheap Landy... just one you haven't spent all your money on.. YET! 🤣 Mine has "only" cost me 3 times what it cost to buy, in the last 2 years :p

    LCM recode

Do these use the LCM from the BMW E39 and similar (E53 X5 and E60 5 series)? I had an E39 some yeas back and fitted the later LCM4 with has quite a few more coding options. Mine was from as X5, but as long as you match to the headlight type (Halogen or Xenon) the rest could be coded with BMW...

Let's talk about bushes ( no sniggering please)

I've got a set of polybushes for my Disco 1, but haven't fitted any yet. My daily car ia a VW Touran that I fitted a Golf R32 drivetrain to. My wife has a standard version. I used PowerFlex on them: The entire front end on mine is polybushed and half the rear. Hers is mostly done in the front...

    misfiring Classic

You may have a leaking injector, running it rich at low speed, but not causing an issue higher up. I had that on my 3.9 It had lumpy idle issues, but also had a hell of a time getting any useful idle after a hot restart, like if sat for 5 mins then restarted.

    Knackered battery

Sounds like a dead cell. 12.6V (fully charged) times 5/6 (5 live and 1 dead cells) gives about 10.5V... It should hold at least 12.5V after having a rest after a proper charge, with a decent charger. (not running in the car). 12.4V is about 75% charged. Lead acids like to be fully charged all...

    FL2 will not start

The BMW part was probably the best... the rest, I'm not convinced 😁 My best mate is trying to give me his BMW E39 530d wagon, so I can repower the Disco... but the 3.0 diesel is the same power as the 3.9 V8, but about 1/3 more torque... at half the RPM.

Righto... Ignore me then ;) Carry on!

    FL2 will not start

These have the BMW engine, right? Does it sound normal when cranking? The timing chains can fail/skip, but they usually sound odd when they've done that. Do you have a video of it cranking?

Driveway Protection Hacks - Found any?

I thought it might be easier just to spray the entire driveway with waste oil 🤣 Make it a feature! I've got about 80 litres of it here currently and just had the driveway done early this month... but it's about 500m2, so I might need to drive the Disco around on it a bit, too 😁

    Lost of drive

Yeah, sounds like youve broken a propshaft, diff, halfshaft or CV. If some one looks underneath (CAREFULLY!), while the foot brake is applied and looks at the two propshafts, while trying to drive, you'll be able to see if the problem is front, or rear. One shaft is probably turning, but not...

    Daft question?

They can cause poor running and complete lack of spark. Have a look at using a Bosch BIM024 module. Reliable and pretty cheap (there are copies too though!). Not hard to fit either. I have it in mine and noticed a much smoother cold start - fires up cleanly the instant the injectors start to...

    Its broken.

Correct. If there is no resistor, the wire is connected to the Park/Neutral switch in the auto, and if it's in park or neutral it runs 700 RPM or in gear it runs 600RPM. It's either open, or a short, depending on lever position. If it sees the resistor (I can't recall the correct value, 510...

    Its broken.

There is nothing to adapt for the ECU. I can swap mine in 5 minutes (and do often, when changing EEPROMs) and my 97 will run on the 97 ECU or the 95 ECU - just swap it, start it up.
  20. AllanWorms

    Its broken.

I don't know how the Reg/Plate thing EVER became a thing. Everybody should forget about it - the VIN determines the model year and it the only relevant source of model year changes. Anyway: You can swap the engine and the ECU without doing anything. As long as you leave the original wiring...
