Well, so long as it worked. On my new Defender the "handbrake" is a button that you push. lt works great but what if it doesn't? No chance of "adjustment" or repair with a couple of 1/2" spanners and a cross head screwdriver.

l had an aftermarket handbrake cable on my TD5 and it was crap. lt wasn't smooth and eventually snapped. But it did work. You could remove the prop shaft and see if the hand brake drum is free to rotate.

How much oil does the gearbox hold. Why not just refit the drain plug, take the selector top off and pour in the required amount of oil. Then see how you go. The gearbox might be okay, as above, but if not you've only lost the price of a couple litres of gearbox oil.
