Defender 110 vibration 65/70mph upwards

Hi all-
Not one to usually ask silly questions and fairly confident at solving problems on my own. However.. Im struggling to work out where I’m getting a vibration from on my td5 110 double cab. It is not lifted, all standard suspension.

From 65/70mph+ only when under load I get a harsh vibration felt from generaly underneath/ feels driveline related & is not through the steering.

When coasting or down hill at that speed there is no vibration, soon as you put it under load to increase speed or pull uphill you get the vibration.

I have fitted new wheels & tyres, new LOF solid mass flywheel & clutch, new Winchester Gears transferbox, new front & rear propshafts, new rear shock absorbers - and the vibration is still there.
Engine/gearbox/transferbox Mounts are all ok.

Diff pinions don’t have any play, but is this where you would start to look at next?

Stick a replacement diff in the back? If no change take it out and put it in the front?
There is significant backlash from the rear axle when changing gears- I’m due to fit some new single piece half shafts, but some of the play could potentially be from the diff.

Struggling thinking what else it would be.

Have been over everything engine related following on from your previous post.
Only blemish on the engine was the exhaust manifold had a slight soot at the last cylinder so got a new one from Total td5 with casting webs cut out, heat treated then re skimmed and full extended studs and spacers.
Still going with my gut feeling and think it’s driveline related.
Going to strip down and check each wheel bearing then move onto the swivels..
Once axles have all had a once over only really leaves the gearbox that’s still original..
 
Thing is many 4wd vehicles will have a point where there is extra vibration at a certain load/speed. There are a lot of parts spinning around. Problem with the 90 110 is there is no damping between the chassis body so you are going to feel it.. Land Rover had a lot of problems with vibration at cruising speeds with the Mk 1 Discovery, the cause was the front axle.
Land Rovers answer was to fix a compensating damper on to the front diff, a dirty great round lump of cast steel !!!o_O
 
I had a vibration issue as you described found it to be a turbo hose leaking at full boost at the turbo connection. A friend also had the same issue thinking this would be an easy fix we looked at all hoses and clips and eventually replaced them all to no avail. A local turbo service center nailed the issue with a eroded waste gate valve. The flap inside the casting was leaking and not sealing.

Have you replaced the injector harness and checked the wiring loom/ECU for oil?

My missus's 90 TD5 had a vibration at speed, only under load, and it turned out it was going on to four cylinders! Goodness knows why it only did it at speed, but replacing the injector harness cured it immediately and the issue never returned.

Hi All. Not quite the same but I almost have the same problem but when towing, however i have a new Defender 110. On a level surface or down hill, no problem, when travelling uphill, i get a heavy vibration. I feels like the drive shaft is "wobbling" when put under load. Im contacting land-rover to see if the issue has been reported with others.
Hi, realise this is two years on, but did you get a resolution to this problem with Land Rover? I have a 2023 Defender 110 and have exactly the same issue. First noticed when towing a trailer with the engine under load the Defender vibrates quite noticeably. Thought it might have been trailer, so disconnected and found a very steep long hill and accelerated hard up the hill and same vibration was felt. So it seems to be the vehicle when under load, not a trailer issue.

Any info much appreciated, as I fear this could be challenging to replicate for a workshop unless this is now a known issue with a prescribed fix.

Not sure if you had this, but I also get a distinct "clunk" sound from the transmission occasionally when it downshifts when under load. A bit worried about the drivetrain at this point.

First noticed when towing a trailer with the engine under load the Defender vibrates quite noticeably. Thought it might have been trailer, so disconnected and found a very steep long hill and accelerated hard up the hill and same vibration was felt. So it seems to be the vehicle when under load, not a trailer issue.

I expect the dealership to implement the solution, I've just found with this type of issue it is difficult to test for in the workshop or on a short test drive, and that they will just run test diagnostics, shrug and say they can't see any issues.

Do a video while driving this(by some one in the passenger seat) showing vibration & any noises. May help them at dealership.

2023? One of the toy ones?
 
lt's only "real" Defenders on here! (and l speak as a 2022 Defender owner)
