I'm pretty certain it was Loctite black silicone sealent, other brands are available:D

I tried to fit the cork seals, failed dismally. I seem to remember that a sort of guide tool is needed, without that the cork doesn't seem to glide into place. With helpful advice from JM, I used sealent, easy, worked a treat, and not a sign of leakage.

If you have an agricultural supplies place nearby they might have it there. I could tell you where to get it in Bury St Edmunds or Sudbury, but that's a long way from Berkshire!
