Lucas Starter Motor on Freelander 1

If no sound when key turned to crank engine then most likely no power is reaching the starter on the low current lead. If the contacts are worn in the starter it usually clicks and won't crank. See if you can find the thin wire to the starter, usually.on a spade connector and remove it to test...

Never use impact wrench on TD4 as you will fracture the cast iron crankshaft. Tool is the answer. Buy a good one or it bends !!!

Freelander 1 Houston we have a problem!!!!

A 15/16 inch ring spanner is a better fit than 24mm. They are cheap and turn up at junk tool sales. Well worth having an old one handy. You can weld an extension on, or just slip a pipe on it as I do.

Freelander 1 Houston we have a problem!!!!

You need to stop the bolt from turning. The link I posted, above, says the back nut is a reverse thread. If that is tight then the 24mm will release the tension when turned.

Freelander 1 Shock absorbers Gas ?

That's what I thought. Maybe change them then. The top mount rubber was rotating in the metal plate. Awful squeeking noise. Not the poly bushes as I thought. Put on ramp and obvious when in the air !!

Freelander 1 Houston we have a problem!!!!

Just had a read. Read this https://www.landyzone.co.uk/land-rover/td4-aux-belt-change.49002/page-2 Looks.like the holding nut is a reverse thread and you turn the 24mm anti clockwise

Freelander 1 Houston we have a problem!!!!

I can't recall for sure but think you turn clockwise. once you tighten the nut you turn the tensioner clockwise so tighten it further. What does manual.say ?? Check the direction but it makes sense or it would just unscrew as you say.

Freelander 1 Shock absorbers Gas ?

Wondered if Freelander 1 came with gas shocks as standard? Doing a top bearing on a front strut. Car drives fine and bounce test fine but no gas pushing strut out when removed. Maybe it is a non gas type ? Anyone know ? Thanks

Freelander 1 Houston we have a problem!!!!

I understand your confusion !! The bit you can't see behind the pulley is that it is on a spring with a crank on the spindle so that the pulley, when turned, moves on an arc into the belt space and hence loosens the belt. You may need to tighten the rear nut as you are not turning the 24mm...
