Il try changing all the EP90 oils today and go from there. I noticed when I changed the gearbox oil that the level was very high! I took out the filler plug and its chucked it out! Will it do any damage driving in diff lock with only one prop? anything to avoid?

Nah mine does it whenever. I can hold it on the whine if there's no real resistance on the box. But as you say, when I lift of there's a short sharp whine as it goes from positive to negative pressure

I finally have a defender! A late 2002 version with the 15P engine. Its done 48,000 miles and has 2 key sets, paperwork etc. Overall a nice vehicle. Only issue is some paint flaking in areas. How much do you think it would cost to get the left hand of the tub and a little of the back resprayed?

Thanks to everyone for their responses. I guess I will wait for one to pop up, I already waited 6 months for a 300tdi and saw some perfect TD5's go which I am now regretting! If I did my homework on the engine instead of reading about issues then I would be driving one by now!

Iv'e heard of plastic head studs :eek:? what's that about? I'm guessing that's the 10p Engines, Is it something that can be sorted during head replacement? What are the symptoms? or what happens to the plastic studs? Im guessing post 2002 is the best to go for?

Thanks guys, out of interest what would be the life span of a TD5 engine assuming I got one at 100,000 and gave it a full service every 6,000 miles and changed the oil filter every 3,000? Used it on the road and didn't beat the crap out of it? As far as mechanical stuff goes ive been doing car...

That's a good point Trax. I've always had low mileage cars before and I think I've developed a mental block about 100,000. Not really applicable for Defenders I know ;)

I don't mind doing a light resto job but Couldn't do stuff like chassis, engine or bulkhead replacement. I park it on the main road and that's also where I do all the work! I don't have anywhere else to go! :(
