    I was told it is normal for Freelanders and is something to do with the differential when different wheels are turning at different speeds. I wouldn't worry about it.

    Must be a hell of a job getting to them all though? Does the dash come apart easily? I can't help but think it must be easier to fit a variable switch where it is supposed to be according to the manual.

    Alarm

    The toot should be a warning that a door is not shut properly. I know you said you checked them all but.... it's a Freelander, each with it's own character.:p You can always lock with the key in the door, which should disable the alarm.
