Shame about the gear but if oil free of bits and there have been no horrible noises then it may be a selector issue.

tottot reacted to Brown's post in the thread Dinitrol or similar with Love Love.
Absolutely! Dinitrol diligence is key. My chassis is approaching 20 years old and hasn't been welded yet. Thin and runny inside the box sections and thick and sticky on the outside. The thin runny stuff can also be used as a primer, because you...

Belt has settled and worn some.

Belt does not stretch, merely settles into its correct operating place, hence why they say turn it over a couple of times by hand.

Change the water pump while in there and the tensioner, you could run a long tap down the threads around water pump as they could get corroded up, change any iffy looking bolts for new too. I didn’t use the a beam torque wrench I guess as you use...

tottot replied to the thread Gear teeth.
Oh, not nice to find. They look like straight cut teeth so from the reverse idler gear and or its associated gears on lay and main shaft. Not hard to take the top off the box for a proper look.
  • tottot
I would not waste time with those gears, heat from welding will have weakened/damaged the teeth.
  • tottot
Yes. That's normal. Unusual for a Salisbury to fail.

If you crack off an injector and it runs rough it shows that injector is working fine. The vertical pump can be rotated some. Fuel filter? Does the lift pump deliver plenty of fuel. Disconnect at filter and see how much comes out.

You need to open it up, all them bolts around the outer. Mark case both sides so it goes back in same place. You tube "Britannica Restorations" for how to set it all back up. But before going there can you see any welding on the bevel gears...

Last year I rebuilt my Series 3 box after it had most of the issues you have.[done series 2a before.] A major hold up for me was finding decent 3/4 syncro springs, some aftermarket ones are rubbish. Problem solved when a forum member kindly sent...

Hi Tim, I have been fixing Land rovers for over fifty years and have not seen anything like that on a series. No Allen key fittings on them when new anyway. Cheers, John.
  • tottot
About the same as a Rover diff in its case.

Turned over with starter? And did you not get any improvement after 3/4 strokes? As lynal above and/or valve seals gone walkabout.

A psi of 50 on first stroke is not great and zero is well bad. How did you conduct the test. Run us through how you did it.

Better look at pics on page 4 then Phill. Recon spreader should work, it only has to open case enough to take load off bearing races.

tottot reacted to 300bhp/ton's post in the thread Tyre size for 90 with Like Like.
It really depends what you are using the vehicle for and what you want to do with it. In reality you don't really need to lift a 90, they come from the factory with lots of clearance and suspension travel. A 2" lift just isn't needed. And no...

It would be good thing to introduce yourself,[rough location] say hello and give some more details about what it may be off to have a chance of finding out.

Does it spin over at a tidy rate when cranking? Fuel filter changed? How long had it sat before you had it?
