From the Morris Minor Owners' club. For exactly the same reason, but they didn't usually run with knock-ons!! I see what you are getting at, yes the inertia of the loose pulley could inadvertently work against everything.

RH thread turns CW to tighten, the pulley turns CW so should drag the nut in, should it be able to rotate about the spindle at all. Also had a damn great spring washer underneath the nut. As for knock ons, how would it be possible to fit them...
