I think you're right, so long as the spindle is pushing the wheel round, like on your car. Whereas, on the alternator the pulley is pushing the spindle. Pushbike pedals are another thing.. 🤪

There's enough guides and YouTube videos I should be fine, and t I be honest this forum has helped me more than anything. Better than my local landy specialist who refused to work on my car , due to " no experience with p38s"

Anything that was working up to the point of the break down is probably still ok, except for one thing. So don't go trying to change stuff until you know it is fubar. Putting petrol down the throat of the carb may have been too much for it...

There is only 1 output shaft from any gearbox. They change to 4wd drive with that fancy thing called a transfer box. There are many auto boxes used in 2 or 4 wd format. Your arguments show you shouldn’t be allowed to pickup a spanner. J
