    Grease is the word

On a series it's Castrol LM for just about everything! I don't think I own any other sort of grease.

    rear fog light wiring

Blue/red wire from the stalk feeds the dip beam and is split off to another blue/red wire which feeds the fog light switch. The black wire goes to the indicator lamp, then to earth. The red/yellow wire feeds the fogs. No power on the blue/red wire at the switch probably means it's become...

You'll always find someone who'll buy an old complete and still running 2.25.

    chassis

The chassis carries the vehicle's identity - you can only retain that identity by replacing the chassis with a new one - and you'll need the paperwork to prove it. Google for defender chassis, you can get a galvanised one for a few pennies more.

head gasket or not head gasket

Used to use mine for a three mile trip to work every day and very little else. The inside of the rocker cover looked like a Hellman's factory in the winter. Change the oil and give it a good run, eventually it will boil off.

    Drum brake upgrades

Kind of depends - if the brakes are in good nick they should work OK for the vehicle. With a standard SWB setup I could easily lock the brakes (the tyres weren't brilliant) and that was without a servo. If you want modern brake performance buy a modern car!

    starting issue, just clicks

Depends, if it's just clicking the motor isn't turning so the bendix won't have a chance to engage. If the starter motor is whirring it's a bendix issue.

Someone is going to have a nice series

Ooh, a rust free bulkhead - I could do with one of them. I wonder if he'd notice if I swapped it?

    starting issue, just clicks

Might be worth slackening and tightening the bolts holding it on in case a bit of corrosion has affected the earth connection. Also remove, clean and replace the live wire on the starter. If that doesn't work pop it off and take off the cover and check to see if the brushes move freely and...

    starting issue, just clicks

Really useful to know if it's a petrol or diesel 'cos the starters are different. Petrols usually have a separate starter and solenoid with a Bendix type engagement, diesels (and V8s) have a pre engage starter where the solenoid is built into the starter and also engages the starter cog with the...

wire under bonnet , poss coolant sensor

Yup, that looks like a thermostatic switch. Does anything happen if you short out the two contacts? And what's that round thing next to it?

Well it certainly wasn't put there by Land Rover! If there is any wiring attached, where does it go and what type/colour is it?

wire under bonnet , poss coolant sensor

Yeah, sounds like a thermostat. Have you seen the thermostat switches on a fridge or boiler? Does it look like that? Is there anything wired to the thermometer bit? Does it have any electrical connectors? Is there an electric fan fitted? This type of thermostat uses a thin metal tube filled...

    Towing a series 3

As long as you are in two wheel drive there should be no problem, as long as it's a standard series box - disengaging the FWHs will just reduce the drag. Is there a legality issue here? I'm sure I've read something on here about dollies?

    Help with lights

Ah, I didn't see the pre made looms you are using. You might need an auto electrician on this one. You don't want turning on the extra lights to also turn on your main beam so you have to buffer the two circuits - it's what the diodes do. They only let current flow in one direction.

Zenith 361v Mixture screw and vacuum

May seem a bit obvious but have you checked the ignition is set up OK? - it's usually the first thing to eliminate as a potential problem. Those sort of MPGs are definitely excessive - one of the problems of the 36IV is a tendency for the body to warp, allowing fuel to bypass the jets and go...
