There is a looped wire under bonnet by header tank with what looks like a sensor on the end of it , currently it is just tucked down side of header , could anyone please tell me what this is as it doesnt seem to be doing anything , im assuming its a low coolant level sensor but not sure to be honest

Thanks

OK, what vehicle, what engine has been bodged into it, what colour wire? Then we might have a chance......

Apologies , series 3 petrol , 2.25l rather than a electrical wire its like a length of bare metal , very thin wire , silver in colour which loops around and then joins with something that looks like a thermometer. Obviously some sort of sensor.

Yeah, sounds like a thermostat. Have you seen the thermostat switches on a fridge or boiler? Does it look like that? Is there anything wired to the thermometer bit? Does it have any electrical connectors? Is there an electric fan fitted?

This type of thermostat uses a thin metal tube filled with a liquid. The end of the tube is inserted into the thing whose temperature is operating the switch. As the liquid expands and contracts with changes in temperature it presses on a bellows in the switch end that move in and out. A switch contact can be moved back and forth so that certain temperatures operate the switch. It means the switch can be remote from the thing it's controlling.

it looks like a fridge thermostat , however it isnt in anything so i dont know what its supposed to be measuring didnt know if it was supposed to be measuring coolant temperature and if so how , no I dont have electric fan. , as mentionned does look like a Kenlowe thermostat but dont know what its monitoring

Well it certainly wasn't put there by Land Rover! If there is any wiring attached, where does it go and what type/colour is it?

OK here it is , it leads to this selector switch , which then connects to positive lead and second wire leads to a jumble of wires by the headlights

Yup, that looks like a thermostatic switch. Does anything happen if you short out the two contacts? And what's that round thing next to it?

yup, missing the top dial. go take a pic of your engine bay and the front of your rad. and interior dash
