I know its difficult without seeing it however if I describe the symptoms I would appreciate your advice. ( 1982 series 3 petrol 2.25)

Oil bath air filter has white lumps in it

Dip stick has white sludge on it

However it never overheats , only has white smoke on startup ( poss steam ) clears up after 1/2 mile .

I never drive it for over 5 miles.

Mechanic says it could be condensation because it hasn't had time to evaporate , he suggests I should take it for a blast down the motorway and check if oils cleared up then .

short journeys are bad for engines they need some hard work ie a good blast up the motorway or similar

Sounds like condensation build up, give it a good run, and then change the oil and clean out the sludge from the filter.

As the others said a good blast on the motorway, you want to get it up to temp the. Drive at 50 ish for a good hour or more to get everything nice and hot and do that atleast every few months.

5 miles is barely enough to get up to working temp and will be wearing your engine something chronic!

If I take it for a blast and the oil is then clear should I assume its condensation ? Forgot to mention coolant is clear . no bubbles and level is constantly at full . I've had a head gasket go on me before and it was like being followed by a cloud , its nothing like that at all .

I won't be clear like yellow oil but the Mayo gunk should be gone

Used to use mine for a three mile trip to work every day and very little else. The inside of the rocker cover looked like a Hellman's factory in the winter. Change the oil and give it a good run, eventually it will boil off.

Mine gets up to temp in just over a mile, but its got new bearings and rings so is still quite tight at the minute. If i use it for work in the week (about a mile journey) I'll give it a decent run on the weekend to charge the battery up if nothing else
