Thanks for the reply, it would seem that nobody wants to do the job so I can imagine I will end up doing it myself. I will double check the breathers etc but I am pretty sure it is just the rear seal on the gearbox as it is gearbox oil leaking and not EP 80 from the transfer box.

Hi, As above really, disco 1 v8 with a leaking gearbox, any idea how much is a reasonable quote from a garage to take off the transfer box and replace the seal? I just cannot face lying under the car trying to lift the transfer box on and off. Many thanks Neil

It could be. I had the same on my V8, coolant loss, panic, change cap and all was good. Tried the old cap again and if you went for a drive and got the car hot when you came back stopped and lifted the bonnet you could hear the cap leaking slightly. I was also very happy!

Hi, Mine whined when I got it. There were two causes. Try running it without the belt (only quickly) to confirm it is something being driven by the belt. Mine was the alternator and also the idle control valve was whistling, the cause was a leak on the inlet plenum.

Yeah having done lots of research I believe the book says its a five hour job. People on other forums seem to think labour should be anything between £200 and top end £350 with parts on top. I can see that I am going to end up doing it on the drive .
