Hi,

As above really, disco 1 v8 with a leaking gearbox, any idea how much is a reasonable quote from a garage to take off the transfer box and replace the seal?

I just cannot face lying under the car trying to lift the transfer box on and off.

Many thanks

Neil

To get the job done by yourself depends on your level of skill and enthusiasm or whether you have a lot of money to part with to get it done by a mechanic in a shop, on my own I removed, resealed and replaced my D1 transfer case in a big days work with no particularly special tools and I do not have a workshop big enough to put the Disco in, so work done on the ground in front yard, and I'm an old bloke, being retired I have lots of time and not much cash to put into the repairs.
You will most probably find, as is common on most Disco's your oil leak is from the transfer case intermediate shaft "o" rings, two very cheap little items to buy but a reasonably big job to replace.
Check the transfer case and gearbox breathers are both open, they are plastic tube and will sometimes get burnt sealed shut on exhaust manifolds allowing the transfer case to build up lots of internal pressure as it heats up in service, it does need to breathe as does the gearbox, if they are indeed blocked just getting the breathers open again can significantly reduce the oil leaks.

Thanks for the reply, it would seem that nobody wants to do the job so I can imagine I will end up doing it myself. I will double check the breathers etc but I am pretty sure it is just the rear seal on the gearbox as it is gearbox oil leaking and not EP 80 from the transfer box.

Like Gazbo, I'm old and retired but still managed to change the gearbox and transfer box on my own outside. It's not difficult but you do need an engine crane, I shoved the arm of the crane in through the passenger side so I was able to take the weight of the 2 boxes and lower them to the ground. It did take me a week from start to finish but if you're working on your own don't rush and think through your next move. Since you're only going to remove the transfer box then that'll be a lot easier :)
