Hi peeps,

I have been browsing through the old threads trying to decifer what is what with respect to alignment of the steering box relative to the steering wheel.

When I worked for BMW years ago there was a preload adjustment on the steering box and this had to be aligned with a little arrow on the box and then you put the steering wheel on straight once steering box in central position then adjust either track rod accordingly for wheel alignment . The amount we used to get in, where the left track rod was longer than the right and someone removed the steering wheel to realign causing the steering to wander due to the offset of the preload on the steering box

What I am trying to work out is , on my 1996 disco 1 is the steering box the same, do i align it on an arrow and then move the wheel . Or does the central position not matter and i just get the heat out and adjust the front steering rod until steering wheel aligned that way ??

Sorry if this has been covered in the past but i would rather get it right than have a wandering steering box because i set it up wrong.

I recently did mine, after searching all the previous threads on here.

Set the steering box to centre, there is a hole where you can put a locking pin, I found a punch that fitted.

I then adjusted the steering wheel, column to make sure that was also centred, either take the wheel off and move around or undo the column in the engine bay and adjust there.

With the steering box and wheel centred I removed the bent drag link and track rod, drag link in front of the axle and track rod behind.

Fitted new drag link and track rod (and steering damper).

Then adjusted the drag link so that the front passenger wheel was in line with the rear passenger wheel, I used the string method. When I was happy with this I adjusted the track rod to bring the drivers front wheel in line with the drivers side rear wheel.

Finally turned everything lock to lock and then checked the alignment again.

Car has lovely smooth steering know and goes where you point it. I believe it should have a degree of toe in or out but mine only does tiny mileage so happy with wheels being parallel at the moment.
