front propshaft UJ(s), had similar issue.

get under the truck with the wheels chocked with the handbrake off and give the prop a give wiggle and look at the UJs.

check axle breather as if it's blocked could make it leak also check condition of flange (where it seals) as if it's a bit rusty/pitted it will damage the seal.

yes straight through bombhole is the legal route. But the club that sign posted the drive around is run by said rep. So I doubt they did not speak to the relevant people in the council to see what their view was on a possible alternative go around route.

I'd look hard for a defender. I picked up mine local for £3300. 97 300tdi.

Have you got anything on the batteries that draw alot of power. Can't remember which battery I had connected these to but when I had roof lights on it would turn the relay off then when you gave the car more revs so more amps are going to the batteries it would come back on.

The flat part that goes around is ok, it's signposted that way after discussion with council and I think rights of way as a more safer option to the bombhole.
