Colour change in lights, dimming? That would suggest the window is getting power but unable to open. Very possible is the cables have failed. Replacement isn't too hard.

I'd look at making something to fit. Just needs a slot to go into and something to keep it there. Fixed in a couple of places to the plastic trim to stop it spinning round.

Put the original exhaust on and get a proper mot. In fact just take it as it is, then if it fails on exhaust put original back on within the re test time.
