Im the same ,Every six months or so ,get a wiff of hot diesel and a misfire on start up ,find mine leek under the canvas cover where the pipe is bent and not always at the ends On removing canvas cover the pipe is all little cracks, the last one was the pipe to the back of the pump ...It was a pain in the hoop to find...:D:D:D

Well unless all spill pipe made is officially crap. It has to have something to do with the chemicals they add to derv these days. It was never this big an issue in the past.

They put more and more bio in it in order to meet EU regs I suspect. All a bit odd with population of planet pushing 9bn they pass laws driving people to use farming land to make fuel.

Why do they use rubber anyway, the other ones are metal - Cheaper option for manufacture? Institutionalised design?

Someone on here must be a dab with things like that (or knows Max whom probably knows plumbing:D)
Could we not use different material like copper or something?

I have worked on diesels amongst other things for over fifty years, i have never known as much trouble with spill pipes as we have now. Has to be the crap they add to the fuel. Just like older petrol vehicles had to have all their rubber fuel lines changed because the shit they call unleaded rotted them. Looks like same is happening with proper fuel. ;):D

So why use rubber if it's no longer appropriate?

years ago you stated silicon pipes were okay but we don't use them now because of the additives in the derv make them useless with modern white.

Same for spill pipes now - so why not change to something that does work like before?
Adapt and overcome ;)

Yes true i have an old dumper with a twin cylinder Lister in it that runs off red diesel. It still has the Silicone spill pipes on it that were fitted twenty years ago with no problems. Put the same Silicone on anything using road diesel and the Silicone swells. So it has to be additives put in road diesel. Maybe the problem is that generally available spill pipe will come in a container from China.

I melt back the outer braid a little to form a ring at the end of the pipe. Since doing this the pipes have lasted about 4 years so far. Heat shrink tube over the ends would do the same thing.

I've done both Kieth, guess it must be crap pipe or modern diesel.

Are you not getting confused with @holidaychicken , I'd never seen anything like what he showed me, it was like a penis but a lot smaller .:p:D:D. Sorry Andy, couldn't resist,as per.
