wot defender has a tdv6?

Some companies are offering £20 or even 30K conversions to TDV6 (can't remember whether that's with a donor vehicle or not).

Personally, TD5 all the way, but the 300 or 200 was the most 'Land Rover' like engine.

what difference is there between a 2.5td and a 2,5tdi ?

just wondered whats in it, seen a lovely looking defender with ful history in the looks i want and un abused, but its a 2.5 td

but reliability is a must, as is being nicer on the road as its for 50 mile round trips to work through winter, and winter daily driving, primarily more than for off road use, but rest of the year is for weekend fun , so really from what i gather i should look for a tdi ? as quieter on the motorway/above 30mph etc , and a tdi isnt the quietest of engines anyway , but drove a defender 300tdi and loved the drive and not too loud at all, as im used to a 300tdi in my dosco anyway

if you aint gonna listen when you ask a question the first time.......:doh::rolleyes:

2.5TD is the 19J engine. It's like the 2.5NA, indirect injection, but with a turbo, and oil cooler, and it's got 10-15bhp more (so it's about 80+bhp or something).

the 2.5TDI (200TDI) is the later direct injection engine from the first defenders and mk1 discoveries, and has much more power and economy. It's got the same torque as the TD, but around 115BHP (if memory serves me correctly). It's also far more likely to go on forever if looked after well, although the TD is supposedly alright if you're religious about oil changes too. I've got one on the floor in my garage which is just waiting for a clutch, and then it's replacing my 2.5NA :D

just look at the poll for fu............:frusty:

TDi's by consensus.........the 300's got a bit more electrickery which is either a good thing or a bad thing depending on your opinion.

Compared to a 19j, TDi's will beam you up and send you off at warp11

112 off the factory floor to be a pedantic git :p

im reading and taking all on board and doing the homework

so is the 200tdi leagues better for reliability too ? what about sound/noise...are they similar or the tdi a lot quieter ? but the more i read the more tdi it has to be, yet there are still so many non tdi defenders about for good money ?

I cant really see the point of the TDV6 in a Defender, the fuel economy of ones I've are terrible plus the fact that Diesel is more expensive. Be aswel just doing a V8 and for the price of the conversion you could have a very nice V8 at that. More power and sounds much nicer!

so are these surveys a little flawed - if there are more 200tdi engines around or there are more landy owners with a 200tdi fitted then I rest my case. So even though the 300tdi is the better engine the 200tdi will always come out on top!

I think the crucial question is 'are there more 200tdi engines around STILL....?' ;)

and why is that then?

personally I have no preference to 200 or 300 engine as both are pretty good imo

:5biagree: :).

could also be that there are a lot of 200tdi discos that will never make another mot so the lump ends up in an old petrol/diesel 90/110 (dont have to mess about with engine mounts etc).

Just for the record, my 200tdi used to make 34mpg on all terrains driven sensibly, now makes 37mpg on much taller muds but still driven sensibly ;) Most we ever got out the TD5 was 32mpg ;)
