Rev counter on my 300tdi had developed a problem where the needle keeps bouncing around at steady revs, its doing my head in!!,

Mine did the same, it ended up being the wire connection on the back of the alternator, I changed the spade connector and all is fine, it can also mean the alerntor is playing up

on the back of the alternator.:doh:My speedo dial does that sometimes. Especially when the weather is damp! I'm guessing its a loose connection/bad earth somehwere. Anyone know where that sensor is?

Not for the speedo it isn't.
It's somewhere after the gearbox.

So Mr Ratty Sir what you're saying is the SPEEDO takes its drive from the back of the alternator? No Kidding?
So does that mean the rev counter takes its drive from the sensor on the transfer box?
I still don't think so.
