Tried changing the starter motor on the 90 for the new shiny high torque one I bought a few weeks ago. I followed the advice online by trying to remove the downpipe but the nuts were seized onto the studs on the manifold so I had to release the section further down by releasing a clamp. The section of exhaust below the manifold had an elbow which prevented me getting the old starter out so it had to stay until I could get the Landy to my local Indy to do it rather than me removing the manifolds and risking shearing the studs and causing more issues. But when I tried to start it afterwards, the 90 started fine!

Still, given the issues I’ve had with the starter, I will get the new one fitted.

Broke down today and got brought home by the AA on a flat bed truck. There's a lack of drive and when in gear there's a kind of tinny rattle when you let the clutch up, reminiscent of pressed sheet metal housings and diaphragm springs. So it sounds clutch-y. Certainly, there's no change whether the difflock is on or off, whether the transfer box is in high or low or the overdrive is in high or low. Or what gear the primary box is in. I wonder if I disturbed something when I had the box out the other day. But it all worked perfectly for 200 miles or so. Looks like I'll have to have the gearbox out again this weekend.

Heard some bad noises from gearbox on way home. Scrawled underneath expecting the worse, but it was just a disintegrated front prop uj. . Prop off, trip to craddocks on way to work tomorrow... relieved.

Passed MOT today. Got electric fan working lovely. Thermostat trigger temp is a bit high for my liking, but it's set at it lowest temp. Anyone got any ideas how to get the fan to come on at a lower temp?

Ordered some parts.. well tried over the phone.
Reg number please?....
Is this a private plate ??
No it’s a 1951.
So the saga of its not metric don’t they understand?
Go to the Indy supplier, walk in point at the computer screen & wait till they say they don’t make it anymore

What temp is it coming on?

Don't know the exact temp, but it's at the top of the thick white bar, whatever temp that is.
It's probably over cooling. My temp needle stays more or less middle, between the white and red bars. Lots of owners run them with the viscous or electric fan. The engines are such big units they dissipate the heat very effectively.

Did a 40mile round trip and then spent a 1/2hr chipping a carpet of fly goo off the windscreen - i’d Forgotten just how rubbish the wipers and washer jets were on Defenders.

My last one had the washer pipes plumbed up the wiper arms, now adding to the list.......

But it goes all the way up to the top of the gauge?! Even with the thermostat set to lowest temp, it only came on just before it got to the panic point. It did cool it down nicely though. I just want it to come on a bit sooner.

Is your thermostat stuck shut?

No, it's a new Revotec electric fan and thermostat. It does eventually come on, just very high.
According to their website they are controllable from 70-120 degrees

I mean the thermostat in the cylinder head of your engine. If the temp gauge needle is going all the way to the top then there's a rabbit off more than just the fan not kicking in. I would take the thermostat out and take it for a run to see what the needle does then. If it still goes up to the top then I'd suspect something wrong with the temp sensor or gauge.

Ok, I'll have a look. Might change the thermostat anyway.

They can be unreliable. Even new ones can be duff. As a baseline test I would still take it for a spin with the stat out. That'll give you a good idea if it's stat or gauge related.

How would the engine thermostat effect the fans separate thermostat?
