I've just been servicing my friend's new (to him) TD5 Defender. I discovered I'd brought everything - tools, oils of every creed, colour and denomination, for engine, gearboxes and diffs - but I'd left the filter kit at home. Never mind, I shall be able to use it on mine later. We managed to find the relevant filers (at a premium price, of course) locally, so all serviced and nice and clean. The vehicle came to him with a fully stamped service book, but I drained the most appalling black sludge out, and there was a rich patina of corrosion on the filter canisters. I expect the previous owner was getting invoiced but nothing was actually getting done to the car. There was water in the gearbox too. How well does the R380 stand up to water contamination I wonder? It still drives fairly well. I suppose time will tell. One of the tiny bolts that holds the lid on the centrifugal oil filter was stripped. I thought it came undone a bit too easily, and there was no resistance at all doing it up. As a temporary measure I've put another bolt in that's a bit longer, so engages with a few turns of thread that are intact a bit deeper in the housing. Phew. Nothing's ever straightforward.
 
Just had the camshaft cover off to get the injector codes. All done now, new gasket on and codes programmed in with the Nanocom.

This all came about after I got the Nanocom last week and started playing, discovered there were no codes programmed in even after paying a company £60 for the privekidge of setting my new ECU up after I changed it. It looks like they also failed to turn off Air-con and Cruise control too so I get fault codes for them all the time too.
Can anyone recommend somewhere near Heathrow who may be able to disable these in the ECU, seems to be one job the Nanocom cannot do.

New rocker gasket, replaced injectors leakoff pipes, full new vacuum pipes for cruise now working perfect, used reinforced fuel line, will never wear again, ordered the low pressure AC pipe split right on bend, job for next weekend, got it up on ramp full steam clean checking for ailmaents all looked well, gave engine a good funking and steam clean looking great, after having the sunroofs professionally done sealed and adjusted and all alpine a fitted with new file and sealed, along with rear compartment windows, bloody marvellous, the headlong as gone of to be relined, so now skint, tired, and ready to enjoy her,oh forgot ordered a new galv chassis for a defender

Took her out today gave the old girl a good run grinning grim ear 2 ear done a few local lanes got her home and me tranny box is making a right bloody racket oooooppps :confused:
 
Replaced nearside snail cams on rear drum as I could not adjust the shoes. Brakes now adjusted perfectly, so jobs a good un :)
 
took the plastic trim off the NS Sill to replace the bottom of the A pillar......

I've been trundling about admiring the countryside. Here's an interesting vintage number, in need of some welding for MOT.



There's not a lot left, but I like that gear driven winch.Spotted at Rhosydd quarries near Blaenau Ffestiniog. 'Twas a lovely day so I trudged on up through the slate tips. Here's the remains of the slate dressing workshops, with accommodation blocks for the workers to the right of the picture:

One problem with the plastic (acrylic) headlight units on the facelift Disco 2, apart from the risk of having them nicked is the way that they go dull and lose their sparkle with age and weather.

I took the opportunity of the pleasant still evening to polish the lenses up a bit, now they look sparkly again.

I used Greygate plastic polish to do the job but you can get away with Brasso.
 
Added coolant and checked the engine, tweaked a small fuel leak, patched the drivers footwell in preparation for its MOT tomorrow! Then went to weld a small patch on the rear chassis and it fell to pieces! Just looking for a new quarter chassis, new springs and trailing arm bushes! 90 on the road for the winter! Ever optimistically yours!
 
Fitted a nice shinny new turbo intercooler; I recently changed the Rad which I believe was the original (25 years old) and although the Turbo intercooler appeared to be fine except some of the cooling fins were all bent up, thus restricting the air flow I thought I would give my Defender a treat and change it also. Now when I stand in front of my Defender and look through the front grill everything looks nice and shinny. I suppose my next trip to Morocco in March will soon put a stop to that.
 
Taking him for a bath later today! And just ordered some new side repeaters to fit at the weekend :)
 
Just ordered a load of Gaskets and oil seals, Heavy duty drive flanges and rear brake drums in preparation to strip the front axle and try and find out where a vibration problem is coming from.
