2, I just replaced mine (OK I got my mechanic mate to do it :) ) whilst refurbing my propshaft with new bearings and a new s/h VCU

That's next on my list.
I have the Bearmach VCU bearings waiting to go on but I think I'm going to buy a Bell Engineering recon VCU & new UJ & do the whole thing in one.
Got to be better than the stress of waiting for it to go bang!
 
Is there not 3 UJ?

err.. not on mine there ain't ? !
There isn't one at the back end that goes on to the rear diff, just the two near the VCU

Mine came as a set of two

Saying that I dunno now...
I just looked on eBay and every one appears to have a UJ at each end on the rear, but I am kinda sure mine doesn't. We certainly only replaced two !

Fitted new led 501 bulbs to sidelights. Were ment to be for number plate bulbs but they are slightly longer and don't fit!
 
Took it for a test run with fresh gearbox oil.
Wow what a difference! And a bit of a relief that the solenoids are ok, as I was quoted £450 to supply and fit new solenoids if I supply the gearbox already removed!
Will do it again in a few thousand miles.

Funny that as I fitted the 501s I'd removed from my sidelights when I fitted LEDs and used them to replace the two duff ones in my number plate light today! I also removed the brake drums to replace the shoes and springs etc as the brakes had been getting worse and graunching, only to find they are almost new under there.... :eek: So I carefully greased any moving points and refitted everything and adjusted the shoes. If nothing else, it was a good opportunity to examine and lube things around the rear end and spread the copper grease love. At least I have a complete rear brake overhaul kit for when they do need replacing... It seems the brakes are better now and the handbrake definitely is so hopefully that was al it needed. Just seems crazy that a 9 year old car needs it's brakes constantly adjusting in this day and age. I lubed the adjusters so hopefully they will self adjust from now on?? Tomorrow I shall whip the fronts off and examine the front pads. A quick look through the wheel seemed ok but best to check. Interestingly, the rear drums showed signs of a lot of muddy water having been through there once. I know that the last owner obviously gave it a good mudding and wading on Salisbury Plain or Marlborough Downs before flogging it. But, the underside has had a lot of waxoyling etc and is remarkably good nick compared to all the others I had seen. Everything still has it's paint on too!
 
Refitted the props and new s/h VCU along with new UJ's and bearings, then this evening been with a couple of mates for a 50 mile green laning trip around the Peak District. Loved every minute and my Freebie performed beautifully as expected :)

You don't need to remove the gearbox to change the solenoid valves!! It's a pretty easy DIY job ;)
One thing I like about the Jatco box, most things that fail a competent Diyer can tackle without taking the box out.

I washed mine. And found a lot of scratches on the passenger side... Hmm....


Also removed the rear brakes yesterday and found all ok, but checked fronts today and also ok, though the discs and pads might get changed next year. One wheel was stuck, but a sledge hammer persuaded it off and now everything is copper greased up.
