My starter motor is currently on the garage floor!
Stripped it off last night in the dark & have the missing skin to prove it! A jubilee clip was in an inconvenient place for my knuckles!

What did you do to fix the stater motor? Mine doesn't seem to always engage.

Same problem as mine. Got a repair kit off eBay. £12 delivered. I shall try and find a link. On her with my phone at the moment

new disc and pads on the front, some cnut had previously rounded one of the bolts off on the caliper so 1 side took me 3hrs the other 30 mins..
oil and filter change, air filter and put a gates inline thermostat in the top hose, lovely and warm now excellent mod, just got the pollen filter to do in the morning then will give it a wash and hover...

When I changed my gearbox oil recently, I was rather hoping it might go into reverse a bit better - but I don't think there's been much difference - still quite 'mushey' and sometimes needs a 2nd attempt. Very little difference all round to the feel of the box. Its a '99 on 85K miles and not sure when last change was - not in our 3 years of ownership.

when putting into revers let the engine died down first and if it still is a problem in might be the master cylinder or even worse the clutch the wife car was terrible changed the master cylinder which is easy and all is well

Booked it in to be looked at. Think at least one injector is on it's way out, started running on 3 cylinders , but luckily I was 60 seconds from home. Now it won't start, just turns over.

My new starter motor is on :)

I couldn't do it (back is too bad right now) but a local mobile mech I know came and sorted it.
Defender owner, but apart from that he's a good lad!

After reading the excellent info I got from this site, he moved on to the Jatco oil.
To quote him: "Umm - there isn't any!"
It seems one of the seals on the gearbox is leaking and there's practically no oil in it. Lucky I have 20 litres of the stuff on hand
He's coming back tomorrow to identify the leaking seal and replace it.

He was very impressed that every time he asked a question, I disappeared into the house, searched the forum and came back with a print-out of what he needed to know.
I think he's going to join.

iPad, it'll save all the running back into the house to check the forum!
