Crap, I think my fuel injection pump is finally giving up the ghost.... 😩 After an hour of driving the pump isn't responding to the pedal very well unless I switch it off and it's restored. I did think a seizing turbo mechanism but I'm not convinced.
A thorough mooch around the engine bay is needed to check connections... No leaks, (rare I know), no untoward signs... When starting from cold if the accelerator pedal is held at 2000rpm and let go the engine will almost stall then recover but never when hot.
As well as the cold weather faster than lighting engine warning flash light on power let off... I suppose after 255k it's got to give up at some point... The modulation is at 59% it was at 50 when the pump was adjusted at 180k. So....
Chain set and bits,
Gearbox and now the fuel pump.. Still cheaper than buying another P38 and doing it all again 🤷

No fault codes recorded? Check the throttle potentiometer for smooth operation.

Only a fuel quantity error that's been there forever. It has been programmed since 2004 by the previous owner and I don't if the error is down to that. The pedal potentiometer is also a good point.

My LHD one with the MIL flash may also have bee remapped as it is a lot quicker than my RHD one. I plan to swap the ECU's over at some point to see if the fault follows the ECU.

A mate (well more of an acquaintance that thinks he's a mate) asked me to replace the pinion bearings on his rear differential on his L405, I managed to persuade him it'd be a better idea to get a used one, check it over and if OK, fit that one as sometimes it needs more than the bearing kit if it's been whining / droning for a while - which his has....
Today was the day...

I doubt that was the cause of the noise but it's not going to help. I've never seen that before - it's a total guess, there was probably a defect in the casting which water got into, then corrosion set in, bursting off the missing bit - which weakened it enough for the crack to form. So my 'mate' is happy that his noise has gone but not so happy that he can't recoup any money by selling on his old diff which he was planning on asking me to refurb for him!

been up to car wash this morning to give the old gal a rinse down. Whilst there a chap from across the road wandered over and asked me if I wanted to buy his 2001 P38 Bordeaux 2.5 diesel. or if I knew of anyone who did. I have seen it around for a few years now and it does look tidy. Alveston red, 70000 on clock . Was honest it needs a knew sunroof as won't wind back fully. Its on air with no leaks but new bags wouldn't go a miss. Apart from the usual bag of wines gums what price do you think he should be asking? Many thanks guys :)

That's a low mileage example. If it is tidy I suspect that could be worth several grand. @brianp38dse could probably fit another on his drive now the RRS has gone?

I could fit one on drive and would love a Bordeaux with the cream leather, red piping and red carpet they look the biz, just dont have any money atm let alone spare money to by another one :(

Did a bit of a post-mortem on the differential above, as you can see, the output bearings have been having a hard time of it, which again, isn't at all the usual wear - the input pinion bearings were completely fine, as was the pinion bevel gear and the ring gear - the bevel gears on the output sleeves and the 'planetary' bevel gears didn't look too worn but were very stiff and probably the cause of excessive loading on the bearings - at that point, I got bored and shoved the whole lot in the skip.

Maybe assembled by rote? Specialist I knew 20 years ago was getting a lot of 4 valve BMW twins in with knackered gearboxes. Rather than "shim to this tolerance" they were being bashed together by outsourced labour with a standard shim size, end loaded the bearings so much you couldn't turn them by hand.
