Checked my coolant temperature after a run yesterday, & again this morning. It's only getting to 77degC. Can't just be the weather can it ? Ordered another thermostat just in case.

Which engine are you running? and, is 77 while driving or stationary?

Dont know how cold it is were you are, how long a run, how did you check the temp?
Cover half the grill? but the actual engine should stay up to temp and get there pretty quick.

The 77deg was just after pulling off the M4 at J2. Never noticed this in my other P38 last winter which always got warm pretty quick in the first mile or two, hence why I though thermostat. It should still be closed at 77deg AFAIK.

No didn't cover the grill. Temp reading using Nanocom. Last night journey was along the M4 from Langley to Ealing & outside was 2-4deg according to HEVAC screen.

Then yes I would say a thermostat is a pretty cheap first look.

its a petrol, isnt it? covering the grill would scare me
the thor starts opening around 75-80 but if its not closing properly then thats the problem

It would still scare me 😂
You have had a bad experience.
After a run on open road the temp will rise when you come to a stop/slow. but during the run it should still reach operating temp.
The 630 usually only runs the fans when I come to a stop/slow traffic.
The TDV8 will roar the fan for about a min after being sat in a carpark for an hour, after a Good hour run, in the summer as the heat in the engine bay cant get out.

My P38 Diesel runs at 90/95C whatever the weather as I have no viscous fan and use electric cooling. Quick warm up too.
Duff stat as others have said would be my guess.

@pwood999 this is why my blowers didn't work properly the clip was broken
As you can see caused the sensor to fall off. Think it was me being hamfisted a while back when I changed heater matrix. Lucky for me Shaun had a spare on a scrapper in the yard and now all is good.
May have a try with dremmel digging out in old one to see how easy it is to solder in one of the thermistors.
Took a reading with multimeter on this one , on fitting 40k as engine warmed up within minutes was dropping quickly

If the old one works, don't destroy it. It could be held in place with ty-wraps.

I have ordered a 33k thermistor to make another, because my 22k version definitely brings the fans on too soon. Unplugged it until the weather warms up, so I don't get blasted with cold air !! Fans still work once the engine gets to about 45-50deg, but not sure how the HEVAC figures that out..

Must have read my mind. Was thinking of tie wraps :)

Thanks on that!!
Couldn't seem to rid of the Airbag Fault message knowingly.. but... it has gone now so it MUST have been one of the connections,
annoyingly I didn't 'see it' disappear... if that makes sense?? Thanks again to all advice!
MOT picked up on front radius arm bushes and track rod ends.. so hopefully will sort all at the weekend.
We're getting there... until the next time (thing)...
