right ok , i split the transfer box off and cleaned everythin up, checked play against spec in landrover book, all ok, bearings ok , end float of gears ok, checked with feelers and dial test indicator, done the oil seals, new gaskits all round, not a lot of pics of the stripping , but a few of rebuilding , been in and out so not had much time fer photography.

Have you got any photos of the transfer box and 4wd dog clutch in bits? Mine is stuck in 4wd at the moment, be nice to see what I will be letting my self in for in about xx yrs time when I can do it :D

bet you all thort i had given up ! it were the end of july when i last did anything to my series, due to being loaded with too much other work , bout time i got somethin done again, picking all the bits for the steering and axles up in the morning so will be removing the front axle and steering first , pics to come
 
sorry, have got the front axle and steering off today in the pooring rain and freezing winds so will post pics tomorrow

finally finished me GB rebuild today

dunno really mate, hoping to have both axles ready for the new year, then get a galvo chassis ,

yours will see the road first i think, i seem to spend too much time cleaning the bits up, :rolleyes: ah well, least it will be like a new un' by the time its done, just got to find a way of gerrin it in the front room !:D


what did yer need for yer gbox in the end ?
 
me GB just needed some time spending on it, it went together in a couple of hours once i got my head around it - i bet it took me longer to find/order and unwrap the new bearings than it took to put together - why is there so little info around regarding the late S3 boxes ?

i also needed to find a little bit of enthusiasm

plus i had a couple of engine rebuilds to finish along with the need to sleep occasionally

only some of it before - in a pile of bits - and after the rebuild, none of which are likely to be of much use

to be honest there isn't very much to it, as long as you dismantle methodically (so you know how it goes back together) keep everything very clean and don't rush it

i can't think of any special tools you'll need, even the castle spanner can be made from a old deep socket if it's a 2 or 2a box - a blow torch will come in handy when you replace the two bearings in the bell housing - don't expect the box to run silent unless you replace all bearings and gears, I've done a few of these now and apart from broken teeth the main issue is the loss of case hardening on them

replacing the selector rods is a pain if you cant remember the correct sequence, haynes tells you how (and then it takes 30 seconds)

cant really say much else other than get yer spanners out

cant really add much to that, do yer oil seals, bearings , clean everythin and check for dammage, replace as needed, dont mix the bits up :)
