today i got the rest of the block stripped,

first off i put some timing marks on , both on the cam and crank faces so it will be easier to re assemble.
find top dead centre ( on compression/ firing) not exhaust, as thers obviously two top deads !
mark thru the centre with a dot then the casing with a dot. so when lined up they will be in time with each other, up on reassembly you can then only be one tooth out witch is obvious and can be sorted as you go.

to pull off the cam gear you need to make a simple puller from some scrap box and 2 bolts.

then pull slowly , using even tention on each bolt .

then i removed the followers and rollers for inspection .

note the oil pressure tensioner, a sure sign of a well engineered engine
this was also removed to be stripped and cleaned.

cam out , in good straight condition too.

next were the crank shaft, crack the 6 bolts holding the bearings then undo and keep in order along with the bearings and shims etc that fall out

now the blocks ready for stripping back to bare metal

once stripped it will need solvent bathing to get the grit and crap out from cleaning it up, then to clean the oilways etc with a cloth and wire
 
lookin good nice pics , keep em coming, im working on the oil pump at the mo (oil light coming on), assume you will be checking that too while its out
any machining required on the bores/main journals
have you miced the diameters for wear

yeah oil pump will be stripped and checked, if iv gone this far i might aswell do everything before rebuilding , had no time today to do anything so will be checking crank and cam for wear in the week, with the micrometer, will be using a glaze buster on the bores as they are still std sized bores and pistons , so with new rings it should be looking good, will be replacing all the bearings, crank and conrod bearings , just because its out and is ideal time to do them, they dont look to have excessive wear but for the price thers no point in messin about
 
Hi there just been looking through you rebuild project and was wondering if you had any pictures of the valve stem oil seal. I am rebuilding a 2 1/4 diesel series 3 engine and I have a series 2 brand new cylinder head I have ground all the new valves in and went to fit the valve stem oil seals but they must be different from the series 3 ones. any ideas or pictures. Thanks simon
 
hi simon, this is the set i was given at paddocks a couple of weeks ago, but if i remember right the set i took of my head all had springs these have 4 sprung and 4 with out.

this is a 2.25 petrol rebuild, am not sure about the diesel oil seals,

yester day the missus went to manchester so i finaly got the block as i wanted it and then cleaned all the oil ways out with a cloth on a bit of wire, using thinners to clear all the grit and crap from wire brushing and grinding.

then give it a coat of red oxide primer to keep the rust off for a bit longer

dont forget to replace your frost/core plugs!, its a good time whilst the engine is out.
would be a buggar to do all this hard work and find out after you have a leaking plug!.
 
yeah, they are out and the block has been cleaned with fernox water treatment, waiting fer the new ones to come in the post,

hey a bit of a tip for cleaning the oily varnish thats around the inside of yer block...
you need to raid yer wifes cleaning cupboard (i know a scary place!!),
find the orange topped "cillit bang", spray this stuff all over yer block,
wash it of...good as new. just dont tell yer wife i told you to raid her cupboard:D
 
yeah i used the mr muscle foam spray in the end , it works quite well, you can see the oil come to the top then wash off and repeat till its clean , works well dont it ! :)
 
yes i made the mistake of buying a couple of drums of gunk ! bloody £18 a go , it worked ok on some things but was too expensive to keep buying it . even petrol and a paint brush was better .
