Sorry for the interruption of service!

Got the rail job away after working last weekend and through this week, but it has left us on three pallets today.
Weather has been rubbish as well, and on the few times I've felt like doing something, it was raining!
Anyhow, this afternoon, after the pallets had gone I went out and got the last few bits done and fired it up.
Started OK once I had given it a couple of on/off cycles to get the fuel pressure up, then it fired more or less straight away.
Bit rattly until the new followers were oiled, and I think we may have got two plug leads crossed, but it didn't sound bad at all.
Tomorrow I'll get under the bonnet at the back of the engine and trace the plug leads through.
Otherwise there are no nasty noises, no alarms in the car systems, suspension pumped up OK and it started to feel like a car again.
The plastic cut-out I made in the fan cowling to clear the top hose was actually built into the cowling, but on the other side, how strange is that? Picture shows the cowling before I cut a semi-circle out of it. Hose fitted fine afterwards.
Some pictures below. The heater hoses were starting to show signs of warmth after a while, so there is circulation.

Well done, always a sigh of relief when she fires up after head job....well before quickly scurrying about bleeding the coolant system whilst choking on the oil burning off the exhaust manifolds. :)
 
If you have emptied the fuel manifold, you need to run a couple or more 'ignition on' cycles as the fuel pump only runs very briefly, as mentioned on another thread.

Hawkeye:

We have the standard Hawkeye with the cable for the Discovery 2, which includes the Bosch Motronic injection.

According to Bearmach, this same cable works on the P38 (same Bosch injection) but we need two adapters to cover ABS and suspension:

BA 5074 and BA 5077

This should cover us for everything. I have ordered these this morning, cheaper to buy direct from Bearmach than most other places.

Any comments / thoughts?

Still got rough running at low rev's, fuel is low so we are going to get 5 gallons into the tank and try again.

Temp up to mid way on the gauge and steady, which is a blessing!

Discovery 2 Hawkeye will read codes on the P38, handy to know.

Put 5 gallons of Asda's finest into the tank, but no real improvement.

Really rough at tickover speeds but picks up well if you give it some beans.

I'll try bleeding the fuel manifold tomorrow, but that shouldn't affect it.

Speeds up if MAF unplugged but still misfiring/running rough.

I'll also read the codes tomorrow, had a whole load of 'misfiring detected' etc so cleared them and we'll go again tomorrow.

I did try running without the purge valve on the inlet manifold in case that was letting fuel vapour through, and although it made a slight difference, I didn't think it was significant.

Hi Peter,
When I did some top end work on my 4.6 Thor it also ran rough afterwards, then read somewhere that the ECU has to re set the parameters, after a few days of driving it around it all settled down and was then fine.

The rough running is purely at idle, it is fine at higher rpm, therefore out of the short term and long term fuel strategies.

We are going to change the IACV and purge valve this morning to see if we can pin the fault down to one of those.

Oh I have, don't worry! :)

I didn't drive it here so don't have a feel for what state it was in originally, but Philip (No2 Son) reckons it was idling OK when he brought it over from the seller's house, about a mile or so.

Both of our D2 V8's have been as good as gold after work being done, so this is new territory for me.

Picked up some spares from the seller, blend motors, suspension pump and a 2013 sat nav CD.

Can you still get those gunson bluetune things. (basically a spark plug with a window in it.
I've used them in the past to find which cylinder is missing and then it's easier to find the cause.

I'm sure I've seen one in the back of the garage a long time ago, my garage comes second to Grrrrrr's shed.:oops:
