New lifters in, manifold fitted but not tightened, heads not tightened.

Cleaned the threads in the inlet manifold, then did the same to the block threads that take the head bolts. Got a new 7/16" UNC plug tap to do the job, not much in there but better out than in.

Heads are on, gaskets are the right way up, not started tightening yet as it came over black outside so we wrapped for a tea break, plus we have to get the inlet manifold in place and nipped up.

We have a new set of lifters to go in before the valley gasket and inlet manifold go on.

Absolutely!

Not doing it properly makes it a waste of time and money, something many weekend mechanics don't seem to realise.

Spent a big chunk of my life working on trucks and Film & TV lighting generators, you soon learn to avoid the short cuts!

Are you doing Dorset this year with your engines.

No, we don't go to Dorset, never have, it's too much of a bun fight to get there, get sited and set up. I know plenty who do go, a lot of guys on our stationary engine forum attend each year.

We always go to Nuenen in Holland, our local show at Rushden, Beaulieu, Lincoln and Kingsfold. There are plenty of shows in the summer, one every weekend if you wanted to do them, but the cost of dragging 3500kg of engine and trailer/living van around, plus a second engine where we can, makes it expensive for the long distance shows.

We don't get paid attendance money like the traction engines do.

Our remaining shows are Lincoln next month and Kingsfold (Horsham) in September.

Rain stopped much being done yesterday, and this morning started off wet, so had a lay in :)

I'll go up to the factory later and see if I can get the heads pulled down before more rain comes.

My heart medication has just been increased this week, so slightly dozy during the days, OK for most things but have to watch out when I'm driving.

First and second stage head tightening done, will leave it settle overnight and check for any that are not close to the rest on torque. We often find that one or two will be slacker by a quarter of a turn than the rest, so we establish a mean torque figure and then check them all to be within a fairly tight tolerance before doing the final tightening.

Got the water pump changed as well, plus a couple of other jobs.

Rain this morning but this afternoon we dodged most of it.

Yes, if I needed it for work I probably would, but I live two streets away from work these days, so a 5-minute walk gets me there, albeit a bit damp this morning!

Anyway, got a dry spell and got the third stage of tightening done, which did my arms and shoulders no good at all, but it's done and we can start getting the top end assembled.

Reinz include the O-rings for the fuel manifold end of the injectors, so we changed all of them and got it assembled with a spot of grease to aid assembly.

Water pump was changed yesterday.

A fair bit of time goes on cleaning parts, fasteners, gasket faces etc etc.

The water pump face had an old gasket, slavered with clear silicon sealer, plus old gasket particles remaining from the previous gasket, so that had to be cleaned up. The inlet manifold bolt set was dirty (and they did have sealer on them) and so on.

I've got most of the new hoses now, just a couple of parts to arrive and we are close to a run. Coil packs will be on today, new plugs fitted, trying the old lead set to see if there are any problems, otherwise I'll bring in a set of STI or Magnecor 'wires' as they call them from the USA. What costs £100 in the UK is $50 or so over there, posted to our mate in San Jose who sends them on to us.

There's nothing else to do on the car apart from the engine, it has a new MOT, new tyres, brakes, suspension airbags and so on.

Looks good, we used to sell our own reconditioned engines, mainly to the trade,and you wouldn't believe the state of some of the finished jobs. They would fit all the ancillaries back without cleaning. It made the job look as if had been done on the cheap.

Always working to a factory time for the job, no allowances for cleaning of parts or investigating other issues,

Factory times are based on work carried out on new cars, no time for corroded fasteners!

Having a bit of a struggle with the offside rear exhaust manifold to head bolt.

We will get there, but it's been called a few names this afternoon!

Lot of tension on the manifolds, wondering about pulling off the support rubbers underneath.
