I wouldn't want to cook my head (although others may :eek:). If I take the replace the stat will I lose much coolant? Will I have problems with trapped air when refilling?
 
I think he it taking it off to see if the temputre rises if so he knows its not the fan , if stuck open in this weather hardly going to get hot with stat stuck open might warm up a bit more in traffic then he will know temp senders working and that a stat is in order

It is far more likely that there is no stat fitted. Wax stats do not normally stick open they always fail shut unless the spring breaks. But they can open too early if the spring goes weak.

On I understand what your saying but that would have to be some time honestly how many diesel electric fans come on regularly in this weather most are electric nowadays I've had defenders with fans off and td5s and the fans don't come on unless left ticking over for what seems like eternity that's what the gauge is for gauge, I could understand if you had a bad cooling system due to a blocked rad but in most cases unlikely .

The problem comes when you have been motoring along and you stop for lights or traffic and the coolant circulation is reduced drastically at tick over. With no air flow through the rad the built up heat has nowhere to go and cannot be dissipated.

And it doesn't trip the fans when you stop at the lights every time does it it it takes what seems like forever,it will do at some point but like said it takes long enough for you to recognise its getting hot .

viscous fans for p38s diesels are expensive £90 but if you get a 300tdi (£30 viscous fan they are the same al you have to do is grind the rivets if your old unit that holds the fan blades on and they will bolt on the 300tdi unit and that will fit straight to the diesel engine but will not fit the v8 petrols

The fan can easily be checked without any need to remove it. If it cannot be turned easily after a few revolutions by hand when cold it is duff. It should not spin free but have a little resistance. When hot it should be difficult to turn but not impossible. No need to remove it, if it was locked it can be heard roaring when the rpm is increased. It would also be very difficult or impossible to turn when cold. If he does that and it checks out his problems are elsewhere.

No point beating around the bush the fan will be comming off to do the stat or be changed if fully locked the engine would still get warm enough to come out the blue and temp would go up .

Possibly, stat or maybe lack of one is certainly favourite, but checking fan takes five minutes or less. Running in blue the fan should never reach it's proper full speed temp anyway. But if it stiffens as it warms it at least proves it is functioning.
 
Appreciate all the replies. Judging by Wammer's description of the fan I'm pretty sure this isn't the problem. Now, for removing the fan I see on that well known auction site you can get a spanner or spanner & hub holding tool set. Should I get the set or just the spanner? Anyone used the set, are they any good?

get the holding tool!! also get the longest spanner you can as the standard ones are only just long enough!!

you can make a holding tool yourself

Finally got around to replacing the thermostat, turned out to be a fairly straightforward job and now the temp gauge is getting up to where it should be :).
Being a muppet I used tap water to dilute the coolant to top up the cooling system. Is this likely to be a problem?

If the inside of your kettle is like a fur coat then yes. Otherwise you should be all right, after all you WILL be replacing the coolant at least every two years, WON'T YOU?
