Hi I have a problem with the bearing on the viscous fan, it has come out of its housing, breaking the fan radiator and the housing is no good, I have a spare housing but it looks not easy to change, but the question is why has it come out? I removed the ACE system earlier in the year and wander if the pulley and belt that came with the kit makes the belt tighter? or is there another reason they go?
 
I would say just old age.
Wonder how many times that bearing has spun since it was fitted!
I think you are right, It has done just under 300 000KM, but have not come across this happening before,, changed the housings over today, had to take out the crankshaft pulley on both the engine I took the housing off and on the one in the car

300k thats some going for any car.
Have seen a few start to wear on the trucks, but it is super rare, two I can recall in the last 15 years, lots of our trucks are well over the 1 million km mark.
Viscous fan hubs on the other hand seem to chuck their guts out for fun.
 
If your belt tensioner was working OK, removing ACE and fitting a shorter belt shouldn't change the "pull" on the viscous pulley bearing.
It obviously seized to cause it to spin in the housing.
When I looked at it after it broke it had not sieze but was a bit noisy, I do not know how constant the tension is from the tensioner, if it is back more does it put a bit more tension on belt? other thing I will look at is are all the pulleys in line? but think it is just old age but always good to ask to see if anyone else has had samething

How hard was it changing the housing?

My belt was screaming when turning the ac on and after checking on the bearing I realised that the housing was enlarged and the bearing was not a tight fit anynore. It was worn but not seized. I did change the bearing and tried a retaining compound to combat the loose fit but it didn't work. So it's time to look for a housing before a bigger failure.

not too hard to change, needed to get crank shaft pulley off which was hardest bit,changing casing not hard about 8 bolts, and a stud on the cylinder head that I took out so I did not need to take sump off but then I dropped the sump anyway as I could not get new casing in and be sure sump gasket was in right place, I have not managed to refit fan as it seams to be catching bottom guard, I will check engine mountings, they have only been in about 3 years but wander if they have allowed the front of engine to drop a bit, might be what caused the problem with fan.
Not sure how much housing would be but would think it was expensive, might be better to get a used housing
 
There should be a circlip holding the bearing in. Did you see one when you changed the bearing?
Yes there was one there but it had came out, not sure if it came out at the time of the problem or had came out before, but think it most likely pulled out as the bearing came out
