Asda have got 1 litre bottles of rape for a quid round here.
Just bought 40 litres from Netto for £35.60. It said pure vegetable oil on label and picture of rapeseed plant on bottle. The offer was last weekend only but Im sure they will do it again soon. I know there is a Netto near you in Hollyhead, I go in it when Im up there camping. Ill let you all know when they do. :)

THERE YOU GO they label things a little different in Brit land, but the damn label had rapeseed on it. Thats the point I was tryin to say. :):):)

John-we do label stuff a bit different over here-in our super markets,we can buy:vegetable oil, lard(rendered pork fat) or beef dripping(rendered beef tallow).Vegetable oil is the generic term for oil of vegetable origin ie no animal fat-it is normally the cheapest and is quite often a blend of veg oils(in spring mainly rape, but in summer can be mainly sunflower-whatever is the cheapest at the time)-we can however also get individual oils,ie rape, soya, sunflower, olive etc,but these tend to be more pricey-the biggest container is normally 3 lts -bigger from cash and carry-All will make sense when you come over

Just came back from Wales pulling my 1200 kg caravan and I can say there is more power using 80/20 veg oil / diesel. Went up that hill at Rault in 3rd on auto box and kept the revs to 2500, she went up at 37 mph min. Previously[ when on straight diesel ]it had been dropping down to 2nd and 30 mph top speed at 3000 revs on same hill..

Danny get yourself to Tesco's for some Sunflower at 28p per litre

Cheers Biolandy, Just been past Tesco at Caernarfon but I had the van on and car park looked tight. I went to the Morrisons instead but it was £3.50 for 3ltrs in there so I left it. I,ll have a look tomorrow and see if there is any left. :)

This is an amazing thread, just read the lot.

Has anyone taken the acid test and stripped an engine that was run on high % of veggie oil for long periods? I would guess that if there were no signs of gum or crap then it surely would mean that veggie gets the thumbs up despite what the savings are etc.

Interesting stuff.

Good point, But what about the fuel filters, fuel pumps, injector pumps, and injector issues that have been coming to lite the last few months. And any head gasket issue's since the switch to veggie oil? :pop2:

Should be no issue at all with head gasket failure, veggie is a much slower longer burn than derv ,hence runs quieter, also coupled with veggie being a superior lubricant than derv.Engine tends to run cooler.
As it is more viscous than derv,it is kinder to the injection pump mixed with some derv to drop the viscosity a bit(twin tanking best of all),but Bosch pumps are extremely tough,so most do not bother.
Veggie having better solvent properties than derv, can loosen up ****e in the tank and lines and dump it in your filter clogging it-best to carry a spare in anticipation-but this does not always happen, depends on the state of your tank.
Ring gumming can rear its head after extended use(talking years of veg only use) but this is easily sorted with some water injection, mate of mine did this with the windscreen washer pump attached to a spray bottle nozzle, fired into the inlet manifold (AFTER TURBO) a few blips on the switch at 60mph on the open road sorted out all his probs.
Most of these problems seem to occurr if you leave your diesel ticking over for hours in traffic jams-diesels after all are designed to work and work hard

Ok this sounds very logical I'm taking you mean your 200/300 td motors.
Now how does this work out with the td5 motors in the newer defenders.
Your diesel's are a bit different than ours in the usa. Bio diesel here messed up older motors, the seals and o- rings broke down and caused injector and coolant failures. So i"m just a little cautious on this subject, so I'll listen to you Brits and learn something.

Thanks

td5's are also ideal running on veg oil, mine was running 50/50 mix before i got rid. due to the td5's internal fuel galeries in the head it super heats the fuel returning to the tank so thins down the oil to similar viscosity as derv. only problem i had was cold starting in the colder months, just be carefull in winter and run a lot less veg oil, once running it was fine all day. the high pressure pump in the tank struggled a bit when the oil was thick due to the temperature. apart from that you should not have any problems running 50/50 during the summer

100% rapeseed in Asda today, 1.20 per litre (1litre bottles). Saving 16p at the pump.
Bought a few boxes and have just chucked 10l on top of 1/4 tank of derv. It'sthe first time I've tried this so starting at 60/30 ish. Fingers crossed the drive to work in the morning will be un-eventful!

P.s. Stabbing the bottle was a great tip.
Tear, insert, stab... Next!

will have to pop into ASDA tomorrow night for some food, so will have a look

PS...... just squeezzzzzeeeeeee the bottle that works quicker, lol, I mix mine in a jerry can as well, just put 10ltr diesel in bottom, then 10 ltrs of oil and shake before putting it in the tank.
