Hello Fellow Masochists,
I'm thinking about retiring my old duchess (P38DSE) and trying a younger bird (L322Td6). I've seen a nice looking 2002 Vogue with 80k on the clock, but I seem to remember someone telling me about front diff problems/factory recalls?...can any of you expurts put me right?....Any other issues I should look out for with this model?...Also, what should I expect with a Vogue spec trim & toys? It doesn't have satnav, or rear seat monitors....I thought that these were standard Vogue bits?...Any information/help would be appreciated.
Cheers,

Front diff, auto box, steering column, and a variety of electrical problems if you search. Out of the frying pan and into the fire:bolt:

The front diff problems were because they didn't use a UJ. The shaft just went straight into the diff. The recall was to fit one. Not sure about the steering column although it rings a bell. Electrical maladies are quite common, especially with water getting into the infotainment system located in the LH side of the luggage comp. (crap window seals). We're seeing more and more people with problems with L322s on here these days. You get the impression they aren't vastly better than the P38s reliability wise (apart from the engines probably).
Good luck.

Thanks guys....I'm still not sure where to go really...do I spend a couple of grand on the ol' duchess....or do I blow 12 grand on a L322....???? If I'm honest,I'm truly toying with the tart-up option on the P38...she's a '96 with 114K and goes like a dream (mostly)...having a few overheat probs at the moment...is it air-locks or sumthin' a little more serious (and expensive!)....I'm a bit torn to tell you the truth....I dont want to spend a fortune on the old girl and still find I'm havin' trouble!....just looking for a bit of reliability!....OK...so I buy a Landcruiser.....nah!...great cars, but no class and no character!!

I would say better the devil you know............

dont be put off, i had a dse for 6 years before i decided to upgrade last feb to a td6. so far so good, had no issues with it at all. when you look at one check the rear wheel arches for rust and the lower tailgate, gearboxes only appear to be a problem if there not serviced, steering columns do play up but its not a common problem. to be honest overall they are a much better car than the p38, test drive one and make your own mind up.

As a follower of all posts on the forum, I can't help but notice over the past couple of years how the trend has changed from making the "New" Range Rover (L322 onwards) the most reliable car yet, with all the P38 problems put in the bin, to find that history is repeating itself with numerous significant problems being reported with the "Vastly" improved new model.
It appears to me that over sophistication in design is far outweighing reliability especially related to "Hi-tech" systems which equates to higher repair costs. The original owners who paid high prices for these cars at least had the comfort of a manufacturers warranty for the first 12 months or so before they sold them on to people who had to foot the bill out of their own pockets, and deep pockets were needed at the end of the day.
I still maintain, even after owning a P38, 4.6 for the past 8-9 years that the best, most reliable and well buily car was my old, long since sold, Classic, Vogue, SE, V8 petrol. I also firmly believe that LPG conversion is detrimental to the performance and reliability of the petrol designed V8. If LPG was superior, why wasn't/isn't the option available from new ??????????

. If LPG was superior, why wasn't/isn't the option available from new ??????????

Because the demand if too low - thats all.

That being said, I'm sure if you walked in to a Land Rover dealership with 80k in your back pocket and asked for a new V8 with lpg - you would get it!

definitely upgrade. I went from a 1999 2.5 DSE autobiography to a 2002 HSE TD6. It is heaps better, in terms of performance, comfort and style.

Sure, there are minor things which can go wrong but can be taken care of by self or a friendly LR-savy mech. If you choose well and do your research on the car first, then it should be a good experience. Check that all recall work has been done using the chassis number or VRN.

(2 years ago I bought a 5-owner, no service history, 2002 HSe sight unseen and with no previous drive or inspection. Not the way to do it but to date it has been nearly faultless and have only spent £200 on a replacement compressor and an inspection by Steve Hill Land rover specialist. It passed its MOT first time and has driven thousands of miles to Europe and back with not a flicker.)

In terms of specs, if it is a real Vogue it SHOULD have satnav. Some unscrupulous sellers swap them for just the CD player as in the HSE and them flog them on ebay. RSE was an option or standard on the Vogue SE. For a full list of what spec should be, search fullfatrr.com.

Thanks again fellas!....I appreciate you points of view....some interesting info posted by Aaron & Dolphinboy...appreciate your advice. The car I've had a look at is advertised on the local trade directory, but I haven't had time to take a close look at it. The pics show a Vogue badged rear tailgate, but the spec doesn't mention sat-nav or rear seat monitors. Could it be an HSE with Vogue badge?....Its supposed to have a FSH !!...is 12.5K OK for a 2002....I was thinking more 11K

I'll check-out whether it has had the recall mods done....would this be stamped into the service logbook?

Cheers fellas!

in terms of price, depends on the condition, history etc. just for ref I paid £11,400 for my HSE 2 years ago. This was the price at auction last week.

02 Land Rover Range Rover Diesel Estate 3.0 Td6 Hse 4dr Auto
63801 miles warranted, Oslo Blue, 5 Services, V5 here, MoT 29 Sep'11, Alloy Wheels, Tow Bar, Leather Trim, CD Player, Climate Control, Sunroof, Sold As Seen, No VAT. £11,000

so yours is in the ball park. However if it is badged Vogue but is not, then take a chunk of money off the price. If it IS a vogue but has had the satnav etc removed, again chop him down.

Heres a solution for ya!! spend the couple of grand to do up your current beast and also get the L322 as long as its a vogue with ALL gadgets!! Ive got a smashing RR sport but TOTALLY regret getting rid of the p38:doh:
