I'm pretty sure I need a new head gasket... Car is overheating on hills and heater goes cold so I think pistons are pumping air in. Someone has suggested the heads might actually be cracked. Anyone got an idea on what that job costs? Simple head gasket and then head gasket and head repairs?

Check the fan, thermostat and also water pump first. These would be replaced as a matter of course if doing the head gasket. Here its normally around 350/400€ a cylinder for a gasket change.

Head gasket failure or cracked heads are not usual on that engine. As Mark said check other things first plus get a sniff test done on the coolant.

Thanks. Yeah pump is the only thing I've not checked. It would have to be intermittently jamming I think to have the effect it's having but I'll check. As for smell I can't detect anything but that doesn't mean it's not getting in there. If it were petrol apparently the hydrocarbon probe can detect it.

The blade on the back of the water pump can crack and stop turning. If it was jamming it would take the belt out eventually.
Any play in the water pump or noise once the belt is released, bin it!
It's cheaper to replace than the head gasket. They do sniff kits for petrol and diesel.

That engine has an electronically controlled thermostat if I remember correctly, so that's another thing to check.
