Do I need special tools? Experience?

Been quoted £350, it's not the sort of bill I need to pay right now!!

Don't fancy an automatic, I like to be in and stay in gear!

Plus, I can get max powerz out of me manualz innit :)
 
Unless you have a (warm) garage, tools and the patience of a saint, at this time of year i'd bite the bullet and pay the £350...as long as you get a guarantee!!!
 
Got an old LT77 disco box lying around not much use to you if ya got a V8 But thought I'd Hijack the thread anyway..
 
He's got a lt 77 that's that's destroyed :p I understand the auto adversity, you can still lock into 1/2/3 but it's still not 'locked as such plus more braking is needed which isn't ideal, get yersen a upgraded lt77 ;)

you do need special tools for an lt77,if you get one you could do it at my place

whats an upgraded lt77 have different from a std one ?

Have got a Disco Transfer box I'm thinking of fitting to the defender. But it could do with been reconned first, is it a diy option?? It needs a crossdrilled input shaft & gear, it had 125k on the vehicle it came off and another 5k on my 300 disco.
 
most have cross drilled gear now ,but some dont t/box can easily be done by diyer as no special tools are needed ,apart from means of fitting outer bearing races without damage and setting preload by checking rolling resistance but you can feel that by hand if competent , disco has choice of 2 input gears 28 tooth ftc5087 and 26 tooth ftc5089

id rebearing it then and rebuild diff, shafts and diff gears are available if needed with new thrust washers for planet gears sun gears have selectable washers
 
I have a good used lt77 already, just needs a rebuild!

The question is whether I should be looking around for an R380, it was the original plan but JM seems to indicate that the LT77 is just as good tbh, and if I buy a second hand box off eBay or whatever I need to be rebuilding it anyway to be sure, so I think why not stick with the box I've got that I know basically works ok?!

Need to make a decision quick though!

How long does it take to do JM?

It's a very kind offer to suggest doing the job at yours, could stick the box in the Eco car with a collection of new parts and drive down on a Sunday morning??

Hopefully the new winch will arrive today, i'll get some pics up and explain all about that :D

If it does, gonna hit the workshop tonight and see about getting that fitted, got a few grill mods to make because the motor on this winch is much bigger so will need some grill cutting away, and also i am fitting a Carling switch mount to the grill to house a switch to control the winch from the grill also.

The winch comes with wireless already fitted but i am not a huge fan so may remove that feature leaving me with a switch on the dash and a switch on the grill, perfect :)

Then FRIDAY evening i think will be gearbox removal time!

Not quite sure what to do yet, but i figure if i get it out anyway then i'll be able to act quickly if a situation arises.

May even be tempted to open it up myself if i am advised to do so!

Interesting about the winch, bet its the 8275 jobby.....

Gearbox is easy enough underneath, I bet you won't even have to jack it up as I can do mine without.

Unfortunately not an 8274 Ian, they are the dream winch, but is end up throwing £1000 at the winch alone, maybe more, they're so modifiable I would find it hard to not want to make all the upgrades! And then there's the work to change my front end, different bumper, various alterations to the radiator area, etc!

The winch I have bought however is nearly as fast as an 8274, with a 65ft/min no load line speed :D

My old winch was 11ft/min so this one is a bit quicker :D :D

It was a toss up between a used Warn 9.5XP or a new Warrior 9500HS, the warn being £1200 new that was not on the cards, but they are between £400 and £600 used, the Warrior was £425 delivered.

After LOTS of deliberation, I finally decided on the Warrior, after finding out they are a direct copy of a Warn so have a nice brake assembly, and they are really rather good quality. Plus, the speed on the Warrior is double that of the Warn at no load, and no load line speed was the thing i was most after improving, so it swing the choice a little!

Anyway, PICS!

Here's my old winch, still 100%, has been superb, recent rebuild brought it back up to full speed and power, if it wasn't for my desire for 8274 line speed it would have stayed!

Now the reason for this madness is to increase the line speed even more :D

The grease used in the gearbox on winches like this is very sticky and viscous, not good for pace!

The mod is to wash it all out and fill with Land Rover one shot grease instead, very good film strength but nice and thin in comparison:

So now the box is reassembled and I've squirted in a good dollop or so of one shot, and I'm now using the drill to work it into the box:

Must admit I noticed whilst in here that the quality of the steelwork, and the fact that the drum had seals fitted to prevent water ingress I to the gubbins, was very good for the money.

Rigged it up on the bench and the thing was RAPID!

Had a few alterations to make though, removing so stuff and adding custom woring...

I think I have a mate with first dibs on the old winch, but I have a Warn M8000 and a non-brand 12000lb that are both mid rebuild that need finishing and putting up for sale also, £150 each I think! :)
 
If my mate doesn't take my Superwinch I was going to ask £200 for it, all the winches will have new rope, fair lead etc.
