That did make me laugh :D
People call me weird for not wanting to buy clothes etc.
I would somewhat agree with the weird bit. Just not due to not buying clothes :D
I always tell 'em what's the point in buying new clothes when I don't go anywhere
I'm quite happy in me scruffs :p
But as you say they wouldn't understand.
Like I've always said
"IF I HAVE TO EXPLAIN YOU WOULDN'T UNDERSTAND"

So it's pretty much piggy bank emptying time again.

This time to the tune of Ashcroft CVs and rear shafts.

Having a pretty hard time committing to purchasing these cvs simply because they are very expensive but deep down I know it's daft not to.

So I'll be making that order in the next few days and then I can pull the front hubs, existing 2522 CVs, pull the shafts, slip the ready to go Ashlocker in, throw it all back together with the Ashcroft CVs and I will have a complete front axle!

Will be a huge relief to have one axle done and boxed off.

Then just the simple task of purchasing the rear diff  and can throw that bugger together anorl!

As always, pics to follow :)

How much are the HD CV's n shafts? They're a bloody fortune for the D2.

And what size boots are you going to run?

£425 for CV joints and £245 for front shafts, vs £600 for D2 shaft/CV combo, all plus vat of course.

Only running 33" so it's not really pushing it on stock equipment.

"Could" have just repaired my old diff for £260 instead of going in for nearly 5k in this rebuild, but evidently I decided not to do that.

It has gone on and on though because, for instance, say I buy an Ashlocker.

Now, I don't want to risk lunching a crownwheel and damaging the internals of a £700 diff at the same time, so i peg it. +£200 round figures.

But then, i could still strip teeth off a crownwheel if I was really trying that day, and it not about doing that do £900 quids worth of diff, so go HD CWP. +£240.

I'm on Ashcroft shafts already because I'm running 24 spline diff with 10 spline hubs because they have wider bearing spacing and allow me to use AEU2522 CVs.

Now, I don't want to put my Ashcroft hardened shafts into cheese LR drive flanges as it could damage some very expensive shafts, that would be stupid. So Ashcroft HD flanges +£220. Also they have an O ring which I good for me cos I'm running oiled hubs so they won't let water in/oil out.

Now, original land rover AEU2522 CVs are very strong and defo ok on 33", but finding them as new is impossible. I don't want to put worn CV splines into very expensive drive flanges because they will chatter about and damage said drive flanges so I buy some new Bearmach ones.

But the problem now is I've got a very well built drivetrain, including what ended up at a £700 transfer case build, all solely relying on the fact that a £25 CV doesn't break.

And you can guarantee that if anything is breaking now, it's the gearbox or the CVs.

So the only sensible option is to put Ashcroft units in.

This leaves a weak link in the old tired LT77 but we have already got a plan for that.

At which point, the only two options will be stall the engine or spin the wheels.

Job done.

I wad under the impression that the D2 CV's are stronger that D1's and so do not have such an urgency to upgrade.

They will be as they are physically larger and already over spec as they were designed for the larger tyres of the D2.

Plus you can guarantee they are all OEM.

I've yet to see someone break a D2 shaft tbh (but I think we seem to be a bit more scared of going for it in them lol). I've seen lots of the stock 2 pin diffs explode, think the yanks tend to do shafts in with all the rock crawling they do, but not so common over here. Most folks I know seem to run muds on a D2 which isn't as aggressive as say a set of special tracks - that's where the shock loading seems to kick in.

Still I dare say someone will pipe up about having snapped a shaft on a D2 :D

D2 diffs have larger pins fyi.

Sam..its just a viscose circle lol.. of improvements :) at least once you've done spending you'll have a pretty much bomb proof drivetrain

I'm looking very much forward to a day when I can take the car out and use it with confidence.

Best of all I've paid for it all more or less out of selling parts, beer money or weekend jobs.

Just about to order them CVs
