now now,

this rebuild is just temporary, I want a VNT or a hybrid.
Just want to get it usable again, the wifes driving it at the mo and people keep moaning about the amount of smoke its putting out (lots)

well what an utter **** it was to get the turbo separated. Sheared off 3 of the 4 bolts holding it together... going to be ace drilling those out.

Also discovered that the turbo cartridge oil feed pipework connection is different... doh...

Its got the more standard 2 little m8 bolts holding it on, whereas the 200tdi one is a threaded port. Might just make up an adaptor... its easier! Unless there is a different oil feed pipe available that someone knows of?

I managed today to source an adaptor plate, so thats sorted ;)

also just won a trackman top for it. Ace!

Had a bit of retail therapy today, bought a bigger intercooler to help keep the EGT lower with the higher boost and fuelling itll be receiving.

Its one of these cheap uns off ebay, but I have one in my 110 and it works a treat, so why spend £500 when £87 does almost as good :) went for the exact same one as the 110. So 115mm deep. The one of the ports has a bit of a cack 90 degree sudden change in direction rather than a swept bend. So there is a minor pressure loss caused by this, but its insignificant to be fair. Its otherwise bloody nigh on the same as an allisport one. Hell it'd be easy to just modify the take off to smooth out the flow. But whats the head loss gonna be, 0.001m or something pathetic.

sod Allisport.

And it leaves £413 to spend on other stuff :)

oh contrary to the sales blurb, they don't just slot in.

you have to modify the rad / intercooler surround by hacking a bit out with a grinder. Easy to do though.

Got wound up with the turbo bolts so ive cheated and bought a new complete turbo. Sorely tempted to buy a VNT but for now ill stick to OEM, maybe get it machined into a hybrid later.

At least now I can whip the old turbo off completely and drill out these damn studs with the pillar drill and build up a spare complete turbo.

Rounded off turbo nuts.... not the ones that are easy to get too... no no no... that would be far to convenient

of course, its only the 3 that are utter sods to get too.... awesome

Turbos on. PHEW!

I nipped down halfrauds and bought some imperial spanners as I didn't have any (modern man you see) which helped no end.
Several hours to get the old swine off - 20 or so minutes to get the new shiney one on. Its not right!

Anyway its just gone dark so no piccies, but I've just driven it down the drive and back and its soooooo much better than its ever been.
Kinda wishing i had gone for the VNT but mergh, itll have to wait.

Will fit the bigger intercooler tomorrow.

Its still pouring blue smoke out the back but it was getting better and better as i drove it so i suspect the exhaust is just filled up with crap and itll get cleaned out now.

sorry. Was up all night with the young daughter, literally ALL night puking up.

It was like something from the exorcist. Bleurgh! Didn't even go out today as been asleep! lol

No pics yet as i was too busy still, but today i fitted a boost pin, replaced the boost hose from the turbo to the fuel compensator, upped the boost (only a smidgen!) and its getting really good now.

It kept blowing the god damn downpipe off though, so I've had to put a small tack weld on to hold it in place. The little bracket on the exhaust which would bolt to the engine doesn't line up with anything at all so i guess its not original. No matter.

Didn't get around to fitting the intercooler as I was sorting the rest. But that is the next job, along with its new LED headlights and then i need to go pick up this trackman top for the back.

Just went to see rogue one at the cinema in it, and it is so much faster i actually went into corners waaaayyy to fast with it as i am not used to the damn thing. Very pleased!

Being able to actually use the outside lane of the motorway is refreshing!
