Hello one and all.

My dad has a range rover p38 2.5 dse auto.

When the car has been driving for a while the injector light flickers on and then the engine dies leaving the caption gear box fault. The car can be started again but within a minute will cut out again showing the same fault.

When the engine is cold there is no problems. The oil looks new and is at the correct level.

Any clues?

gearbox fault message is first one to flag up when battery or alternator aren't 100%... Is this the symptoms of the known diesel hot start problem? Try searching that maybe? I'm not sure but no-one else had responded to you and I know how frustrating that is!

I've not got a diesel but my 4.0 is flagging a gearbox fault aswell, does yours lock into third gear when the message comes up?

yes! I'd forgot that, my mates fusebox stank like hot scalectrix when he had a fault, took it to bits and it had a short in the bottom, sorting that out fixed it...

Car doesnt lock into third. It runs fine when cold and then at some random time when car has heated up it gives the fault message and then shuts down the engine. You can restart however at times it immediately shuts the engine down again. Will have a look at the suggested items see if anything is suspect.

Many thanks
Chris

Hi There,
Do you get the gearbox fault message followed by the engine cutting out or does the engine cut out followed by the gearbox fault message?
If its the second option the fault message is triggered by the gears being driven by the wheels but not the oil pump which is drven from the engine by the input shaft to the box, this would be a red herring and possibly have nothing to do with the box at all.
I have had this message when my dse kept cutting out -which was due to cr*p blocking the fuel pick up pipe in the tank.

Just an update. the car is now fixed. The gearbox fault was a red herring. The fault was the no4 injector and since its replacement the fault has gone. Nothing appeared on the diagnostics however.

hey that is an unusual event,it flashed up the injector symbol and it was an injector, there is hope for mine yet.lol

i gave it into a specialist 4x4 garage in inverness and he's quite switched on with his vehicles and he jus started testing things. It was either going to be the injector, the tank lift pump or the fuel pump. I'm glad it was the cheaper option as the pump costs the best part of a grand
