Hi All,

You may be able to help. I trying to get my 98 P38 2.5 into reasonable order so the missus can drive it(she has bought a 2 seater and needs my 5 seats from time to time).

Firstly some genius(hopefully not reading) has disconnected the full bank of centre elec window switches and put individually switches(from a Fiat i think) on each door!!! Works but not very beautiful at all. Elec mirrors dont work but could be unrelated. Why did he do this, do the switches act up or could it be something else? I am prepared to replace them and redo the wiring so long as i am pretty sure of the problem. Any ideas for me?

Second. The drivers door open switch has just shopped working(says door open all the time). Is this in the lock? Can they be cleaned up or is it a replace job?

Many thanks for all you answers in advance!

strip the door card out and theres a microswitch on the lock, you may need to take the lock mech out, make sure the wire is on and a good connection. usually a good fiddle and regrease of the lock internals brings it all back into good working order

the switch packs often pack up but its a simple case of exchanging the pack for a working one. if the p/owner tried another switch pack and it didnt work mebbe he thought it was easier to replace the switches with fiat ones!!

both are common issues!!

The 4 switches on the centre console operate through the 'Centre Console Switch Pack' which then communicates with the BeCM. This in turn communicates with the relevant door outstation and it is this that puts your windows up and down. Your electric mirrors operate through the same switch pack to the BeCM so I suspect that this has failed, hence the switches on the doors. I've no idea how they've been wired in here. The switches and switchpack are all the one assembly. Ebay from someone who's breaking a P38 is probably your best bet (although beware the usual shysters).

The door switches are all in the lock. Could be stuck or bad contact. You'll need to remove the lock to do this. It's fiddly. (And even worse to get back in....)

Thanks Derek, so do you suspect the BECM, or would this knock out other stuff too?

NO, I think the BeCM is probably OK. The Centre Console Switch Pack is a known trouble maker. I think that'd be the first thing to change. You might have to re-instate the door wiring though depending on what's been done in there. Re-reading what I said above loks like I meant I suspected the BeCM. I meant the switch pack. Sorry for the confusion.

If you haven't already, download a copy of Rave from the Green Oval (or buy a copy on a dvd from Ebay for a couple of quid). You can't do FA on these without it.
