Nobody insulted your integrity. Being able to change the spark plugs on a Subaru or fit the spare wheel on a Hilux does not make you mechanically experienced. The ELAB being taken out by swarf and debris around the valve seat is indicative of a very badly revamped exchange pump or damaged pump internals. You may also noticed that the comment was not addressed to you.
Feeling better I see Tony.;):D

It is an Auto.

Im used to driving a well tuned Impreza on the nice weekends so obviously its a bit of a slug in comparison, pleasantly surprised though as its no 'flat' and pulls really well.
I think with a motor that's done 120k and is 21 years old I'd rather 'nurse' it a bit and not 'tune' , it'll probably s4it itself knowing my luck
The auto thing shouldn't matter or the mileage if it's been looked after.
Mine is at 220.000mls and still chuffing strong and an auto and its tuned! It does drop the revs between the gear changes to allow the power to drop off and help the box. It's not rocket ship fast but amazes passengers when it's picks up its skirts and runs off:D
If it's tuned properly for the auto then it should be safe. It's history of maintenance is the most important. This one I have was really loved and came with a book of history from 4 yrs old when it was bought, the guy also had one for his wife, along with a disco and a defender in his collection.

Tuning opinion. My first Rovy (exchanged for Subaru) 1996 2.5dseAUTO, had done 180,000 miles . I put the little blackbox on and it became a rocket. I would advise anyone to do the same,it so changes the personality of the car. One doesn't have to use the power but in traffic its a boon. Also the fitting of the box only takes ten minutes if you're slow. It is removable if/when you sell the car. I had no problems with the car except airbags and a wiper motor in nine years, all repairs and servicing by myself and jslandrover Roy. However on my recent 1997 2'5dse Auto has done at least 120000 kms and to try something different bought an exchange ECU from Turners' delivered to me here in France a simple swop and Sync, Terrific also now a rocket and where I live its all mountans and vally's Like the Rhondda. So using the sport button useful, its a bit quick so good shocks and airbags important, but sooo smoooth. I Recommend Turners' not all on this forum agree though. C'est la vie. Motto, "Get a life Get a P38" its printed on my Tshirt and number plate. Choice of tyres, shocks, bags crucial to a P38 and front suspension bits, battery's influence all the electronics esp diesels.

Remember 'injector light' orange spring, should not come on when engine is hot on a 2.5 dse. It means the timing of the fip is out and a trick/fix has been installed.
Just get the FIP tuning done and check the green sonde/sender to the ECU. Unless the trick switches itself off your just wasting fuel, which you can check by the stalk in consumption position, i.e. 20.3 - 30.7 -25.8 Miles per gallon urban, mixed and combined. 13.9 -9.2 - 10.9 litres per 100 Kms. "handbook 1995-2001 MY".
