I believe part of the problem (in earlier cars at least) was a rather optmistic minimum engine speed for the hot engine. A weak battery, old starter and wiring and it a bit borderline. Add a retarded point of injection from chain stretch and it pushes it over the edge. I think they changed that mapping slightly on later models, possibly more than once (97 and 99?) from what Dopey's BMW mate said.

Running the lift pump and sticking the glow-plugs on all help it catch. Didn't they remove the NRV from the lift pump on later models?

I seem to recall Datatek saying even the 99 still suffered.
1999 did still suffer to some degree but only because of chain stretch retarding static.
 
My MY95 has to have the hotstart or starting when warm is near impossible even with the static bang on. I’m still running with a dead lift pump so that’s not helping but it doesn’t come on for cranking on MY95 anyway unless I do Wammers ecu mod.
 
sorry G5r ,on the consumption I'm unable get less than 100kms/ 11.8, at steady 75kms, I feel I should be able get 100kms/10.2. Its quite a difference. The speed limit here is 80kms and frequently 70 and 50 kms in the small villages. My average journey time is 40 mins. I would like a little better consumption and I don't like glow plugs coming on unnecessarily when hot; as most find, a good strong battery is most of the issues cured. Thanks Wammers I'll continue search for hotfix chasing the wires.
 
Furthermore, recently had a "alternator faulty" message, that can have all sorts of gremlin implications, so I ve bought a new one £90 delivered (if it ever arrives with Brexit).
It was a second hand one put on last year when I had no option. I'll keep all posted on customs charges etc., Bits from U.K may become very expensive for us poor expats. Might have to resort to Irish contraband !!
