no gaiters on the shocks paul?
swapped some off a mates that didn't have gaiters, a year old and covered in stone chips that went rusty on the rod. shagged the seals up.

Not had the engine running yet, not done anything to her for over a week or so.

Front shocks have gaiters and when I can get some I'll put them on the rears too. I was in two minds about them, trapping water and crud etc maybe, but used to use them on Motorbikes without dire consequences ... ;)

you never stop the mud and **** getting in but the problem is the shafts getting peened with flying stones etc

as such, gaiters are a good thing imo

No updates, bad back, away for the holidays, starting back at work tomorrow .. ;)

Update and a bit of an explanation.

OK, not much to report but more excuses.

I'm T2 diabetic, and had a couple of issues with going hypo, which isn't nice at all, but more than that I also suffer occasionally, from depression. It's hit me a bit since the incident and over the christmas period which was the real reason why I didn't get a lot done on the vehicle. Sorry if I ignored people asking questions, emails, Facebook and indeed phone calls. If I haven’t replied it’s ‘cos I couldn’t face up to being a bit ill. I deal with it by backing off and keeping quiet … I go off on ym own for hours at a time, walking, riding, whatever.

Any road up, I'm now getting better, feeling good and today got out and did a few bits .. sorely needed bits!

Mostly cleaned a few bits up, replaced a broken vice, and decided to remove the timing cover and do the belt/timing. TC had already helped with cracking the crank bolt a few weeks ago, so it was an easy job to remove all the bits to find this ..

A bit rough and unclean!

Little tip for anyone removing 14 bolts from the timing cover, there are a few different bolt lengths so they need positions noting .. use a piece of paper with a rough line drawing of the case on it and push them through it.

So then thought I’d check the timing anyway and all the bits, found the timing to be spot on, didn’t expect anything else really, but had to make a small tool to help align everything. To do this you need a wading plug and a 3/16th’s drillbit, (in my case 4.5mm ‘cos I couldn’t find 3/16th’s). I then made up a drillpress from a stand I had from when I worked at Desoutter .. worked fine! .. ;)
The pics show the stand and the tool, this is used in the bellhousing wading plug hole so the drill can be pushed up to lock the flywheel …

It’s used mostly to get piston No1 to TDC, which is done by rotating the crank so the woodruff key is vertical, see the red arrow, the tool should then be fitted in the plughole and the drillbit should engage with a slot in the flywheel. The yellow arrow is pointing to the tensioner/idler which is seized and will be replaced!

At this point, if it’s right, the cam pulley should also have it’s mark line up with the webbing that’s also marked.

You should then be able to use the Landrover special part, (costafortuneprobably) or a 9.5mm drill bit to lock the injector pump timing. It should push in easily, but it’s worth leaving the socket on the crank and waggling it a little .. there is some (very minor) play in the parts.

And that’s it for today. Got dark, wife and son returned so time for a meal .. ;) Next time I'll be cleaning the insides, replacing all the timing gubbins and re-fitting the timing cover etc.

Hopefully much more will be done now I feel OK, today was just the start I needed, tried a job, needed summat fettling to do the job, which led to more pratting about with other stuff, jeez I need a big workshop really. I’ve now booked the last week of January off work for fettling without having to break off for ****e .. so it will be running for February I hope with just minor tweaks to finish it. ;)

Damn straight ..

Feeling good though 'cos I know it won't be long .. :)

well done paul, glad to see youre getting better. a couple of lads at work are diabetic and it can affect people differently(one bloke gets very nasty).
ive booked time off to get my 300 engine fitted, first week in march so hopefully a bit warmer than january.
