lol..
more years ago than I can remember, I used to rebuild my racing mini engines in our then kitchen on a massive pine table.
sort of nearly each week ;)
Mrs loved me then.................... LOL

get screamed at now If I come in with muddy boots FFS !!

but when your cold, when your old, and when you need to pee urgently.....

sometimes the screaming at is better than a warm wet feeling...lol

i tried that with my mini engine, but me mam said noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo.:D

My ears are still ringing from the beating the wife gave me when I filled the dish washer up with engine bits,

Heh, when I had a flat many years ago, up a couple of flights of stairs, I had a racing Katana GSX 1000 engine in the bathroom .. that leaked!

Wouldn't have been so bad but it was underfloor heating, so I could just be getting the flat warm when the smoke alarms would go off .. :)

We've decided to definitely keep this Disco now and clean it up, nothing good enough for me or straight enough that's also cheap enough to do up as I'd like. Wrong time of year for a decent but cheap Landrover, or any 4x4, I guess ..

Stupid not to, it's as straight as a straight thing with minimal rust and I 'know' where the bad bit is ..

So we've spent about £400 on it so far for bits and bobs and stuff, including the 'garage', but reckon another £400 will see it looking like a right proper job ... and running better than ever .. so gonna end up, hopefully, with just about enough to afford an Ashcroft Limited Slip Diff. Won't afford a proper locking diff!

Trying to fettle things with cleaning and re-building rather than buying new. Most expenditure is on nuts and bolts and parts so far .. +5" rear shocks and mounts for them, Waterproof grease (loads) gaskets for gearboxes, timing kit, set of bushes and decent trailing arms (Adrenaline) and a number of electrical bits like a fusebox, loom wiper switches etc. Also getting things like a new lift pump, new hoses and pipes, most of which are cracked with age, so the insurance payout is allowing me to do decent maintenance before sh1 happens for a change ...

I've also found a place where I can buy Timken wheel bearings at £10 a pair, but have to buy a minimum quantity for that and postage, but still cheaper than buying odd ones at £9 each delivered .. :)

So it's looking very positive here right now, have set myself a realistic date of January 19th to get it running and properly back on the road. Hopefully it'll be before then, but I've still to even start stripping the internals, though the seats and carpets are gone!

Keep up the good work Paul, I don't envy you working outside in the cold weather but at least it keeps you moving, all the best for the deadline. Does this mean we'll be seeing the 'Grand Start Up' on video? :)

Damn right .. ;)

Great to hear it's going to live on! Fair play for getting stuck in! :)
:clap2:
yes, me too with all the rest of us urging you on to keep it.

back in the day I was known for "recycling" little older vans,
HA bedfords, morris Itals, even old aircooled VW vans.
my point was, its already been made, been thoroughly looked over by me, resprayed mainly in oilbased white (shiney)
local builders that needed a small reliable van bought them from me.

its the same with your washed disco, faced with parting from it, its been part of you from some time, it becomes "yours"
and no other will ever be the same.
agree you`ll question your madness at times, but just keep at it, bit at a time, and then....
another little vid with your accent that makes me smile..
good luck to you Paul...
and send the mrs best wishes for putting up with you....

Bit of a boring one this update.

Video of the engine area as it is now ..

Update

Keep stripping bits off, refurbing them and replacing parts as needed, but it's slow going. Removed the radiator and Intercooler, both full of mud/sediment, and fettled the Alternator yesterday .. full of mud and leaves! All working fine now.

Today I replaced the Glow plugs, removed power steering pulley and pump to get to the alternator stud that's broken, but it'll need something else! Then got the fuel feed line off the lift pump so I can drain the remaining water from the bottom of the tank .. As usual, just sucked the air out and let it syphon off. Slow going, but safe!!

Had this arrive just as I had to go to work, so I'll put it up tomorrow, or maybe wait till the weekend when my son can help, me being a shortarse. ..
Garage
Hopefully the Disco will fit in OK and I'll be able to work whatever the weather.

Next job will be to replace wheel bearings and stuff, as necessary, so we can move the Disco around to get the trailer and caravan out, so that'll get done tomorrow I guess. I also won a set of rear seats off ebay for £15, hopefully they'll not smell quite as much as the ones I'm just about to chuck out of the Disco boot .. ;)

New bushes, some gaskets, bolts, 'stuff' arrived too. Can't move in me shed .. ;)

More to come ...

Good to see this disco will mate a full recovery. There's way to many people out there who would have given up along time ago and just scraped it.
Will be keeping my eye on this rebuild.

Small steps, I only get a couple of hours to work on it a day, so just keep doing bits. This video is slightly interesting .. Shows a few bits I'm adding, not bothered showing the oils, filters, brake pads etc 'cos they're all the same, ish ..

todays update

I also put up a couple of hoops of the 'garage' today and the Disco fits .. just .. ;) Hopefully we'll get it up fully this weekend before the real bad weather comes. Also making a movable table or two so I can keep some tools outside instead of clearing them all away to the shed every afternoon/evening. Then not sure but was going to change the timing belt and tensioner, idler etc before re-starting it, but I'm in two minds about getting it running first though, 'cos I know it was running fine, then doing the timing 'just in case' something goes wrong when it runs.

Same with changing all the bushes and things .. if the engine does bugger up then it's a waste so might concentrate on that first.

Still got to get wheels and wheel bearings on though so I can move it about ..

Decisions decisions ...

Personally I'd take the cover off and visually inspect the timing belt - if it looks ok then go for it, if it looks bad in there replace - doesn't matter about gaskets and stuff as you'll be doing it properly at some point soon anyway...?

"ahlaar fettlinshi'"
:pound:

do the cam belt paul, with the amount of water you drained out of everywhere else, silt and **** will have got into the timing chest.
or at least get the chest off to see how much ****'s in there

ps
done me own vid walkthrough but hidden it in workshop heaters

I also put up a couple of hoops of the 'garage' today and the Disco fits .. just .. ;) ...

I am thinking of buying something like this instead of letting my poor old girl survive ouside in the harsh winter so I am interested to know about the 'just fits in'.
Do you mean in height, width or length?? I can't make up my mind what size is best without it being too big - as long as I can drive it in and out.

Height, but length and width will easily fit .. the hoops fitted over the rear roof corners by about an inch .. that's without the weight of the plastic cover though. This is with mine on axle stands, and a 2" spring lift with no weight on. Dunno about the door yet, but will take pics etc at the weekend sometime when it's fully up ;) It's also on concrete with no tie-downs and stuff, just a quick put up to see.

Thanks for that. I had been checking on a few portable garages and did discover that the height could be the problem, especially the bar that seem to cross at eves height which really means that driving in is impossible . The one I am thinking of getting is from a German company called INTENT24.com. I know they are not cheap but, for me, it could be cheaper than having a garage built!

As the engine turns over just change the timing belt etc before starting, if engine is knackered you can always remove them and save for next engine

Had a laugh today ..

Just doing the normal things, fettling stuff, and top-cat came round, bit of a chin-wag, cups of tea, and helped me put the 'garage' up .. ;) I'll be returning the favour and hindering his garage erections ...

Garage - YouTube

Bought and collected some rear seats as well today, £15 off ebay, so that's nice .. and better than I thought they'd be!

For anyone whose interested, we think the Disco, especially a standard Disco, will drive out the front easily. The door is zipped only up the sides, and if necessary the front of the whole thing might be lifted slightly to help. My Disco has +2" springs all round, with no weight in it, and tyres that are about 3 to 4" larger diameter so altogether it sits about 4" higher at the roof than standard .. and there's still plenty room above the roof and sides.

Enjoy, as they say .. ;)
