phase 1 is complete,
my welsh friend - uv dye turned up today and we put that in the box, which had lost about 1/2 litre from when we filled it about a month ago.
we'll check that tomorrow with the uv torch, but the box is coming out as the torque converter is definitely not happy with the rumble and rev counter bounce

built the ramps today which give approximately 9" of extra lift, i was doubtful at first but they seem good.
the axle stands aren't on anything yet but we will leave them under for added security in case of a sh*t cart

4 x scaffold boards (already had) + £26 for the timber from local merchant
200 x ultimate 5x80 screws which are the best ever £10

i cannot take credit for the design or manufacture as my mate did 90% but they feel sturdy and the rangey drove up them no problem but i would have liked low range to just creep up

Very good:), personally, i like my 4 ramps as you have much more free space for your legs to flail about, although i reckon you could fab up a sliding/wheeled cross beam jack to aid trans support...?

not sure yet, may turn them into 4 smaller ramps, dismantle or i might just get a roofrack and keep them up there all the time like i am on some sort of sahara expedition :)

i did think of doing the 4 separate ramps but my mate thought this would be better and it did work well
we also thought of using the ramps to gain some height and then jack onto axle stands but this seems a lot more sturdy and i think it will be high enough to get the box out

i like the idea of the cross beam jack like you get on the garage lifts
we are looking at using a motorcycle jack with a jig to support the box
the jack will be on wheels so we can lower it and pull it out either end, hopefully
 
When are you startng? I hope you will take some photo's,, i do like a PROPER spanner job, I'm looking forward to seeing tools out and some bit's on the ground, good luck,

tomorrow we are starting to remove all the ancillaries, exhaust etc and if that goes well, we'll carry on, taking our time though

i took it out tonight and it seemed worse, almost pulsating or lurching as i drove it, which may be caused by the uv additive messing with the ATF

we'll get some fots as we go

Without triangulation between the verticals, that lot could collapse like a line of domino's:eek:

That would be a lot of mitred angle joints, and still not that strong with screw fixings. Better using some solid 6x4 blocks in there.
It'll end up being heavier than your Range Rover; but at least your cup of tea will be safe!!

A simple 45 degree cut across a piece of the same wood that made the uprights would make a triangular piece to fit in, dead easy and quick. Doesn't need to be done on every upright.
 
I didn't need any mitre cuts , supports only needed to be laid out in a concertina pattern or indeed a series of I's
 
On closer look of your photo do I spy some cross section pieces of wood, making up 'T' sections? That'll stop any domino effect.:cool:
 
I think the stress and pushing force on mounting the darn things would have highlighted that flaw, which of course it didn't.
Slap a side panel structural skin of ply if unsure, but it looks fine to me.

ramps worked a treat, there are several supports forming I sections to stop it all flopping forwards or backwards. feels really secure, and we get axle stands under for added security. felt a lot more secure than just axle stands.

i'll post some more detail but as an update, here we are..
took out fan, cooling part and front engine cover for access and to enable us to turn the crank and access the top 2 bell housing bolts

exhaust out as well, no real hassle, one exhaust nut at the rear rounded but popped off rubbers. about 2.5 hours to the stage shown in 4th pic

it makes a massive difference when you get the pipe and heat shields off to seeing whats actually involved

we stopped for a tidy up about 8 pm, we started around 11 am, stopped an hour or more for lunch and a fair bit of time was taking designing and building the jig to support the box on top of the motorcycle lift we used.
the centre of gravity is perfect with the transfer box left in place and supporting on and around the sump, the sump pan itself doesn't take much weight, but its really strong anyway.

few awkward bits but this is where we are

So box is out, wll done.. The oil on the bell housing? Rockers? Valley pan?
You will have great access to back off engine now, apparently there is a tell-tale hole from manifold/valley area? If its oil from this hole its valley pan, if its water its coolant tube fro pump to distribution manifold on rear of block, just worth checking while you can see it. It is a V8 isn't it?

Great start anyway, well done indeed. Can't wait for next phase..:)
