I recently had an issue with acceleration on my Range Rover. A garage said there were no faults registered in either the engine or transmition diagnostics. Also no mechanical failure was spotted.
The best way I can describe the issue was when accelerating the revs would climb without hesitation but the speed would not increase as if in neutral or climbing a very steep hill. Kick down also activated but without much effect. I could keep vehicle at a steady constant speed.
When I limped off motorway it seemed ok again, and when I had started it back up to go to the garage.

Any thoughts would be useful.
Thanks
NF
PS It was -2degrees accasionally but not that cold I would expect to effect performance.

gearbox fluid low
gearbox fluid old
gearbox filter clagged up
gearbox fluid old, low, thick and trying to get through a clagged up filter.

Thanks - I'll check these out, but I will be surprised if this is the issue. I bought the vehicle 4 months ago from main agent. Would hope they checked this before selling it.
Also, I was doing 70 - 80mph before this and all seemed fine. When I went into 50mph road works and as soon as I accelerated once out of the restricted zone I noticed the issue.
I am assuming thick clogged or dirty oil would cause this so quickly or clear itself after!?

Can you hear your transmission shifting through the gears or does is sound like it's stuck in one gear when this happens? The limp-home/failsafe condition for the ZF 5HP24 transmission is 4th gear and for the GM 5L40-E it's 5th. Which model is your L322?

It's a 2004 54 plate L322
TD6 Vogue
The garage mentioned something about limp home mode - but I wonder then what would have caused this to happen. Also why it cleared and why no error reading on diagnostic test?
Appreciate all the comments I'm getting - thanks.

I was on motorway at first so not sure about gear changes - I think it was changing gear because kick down come in on first attempt to accelerate and I gave it more gas to get it going.

Hi Mate, it sound like the Gearbox going, when you stop the car and restart it does it seem to be ok for a while?

Thanks everyone for your replies.

Steve - When I slowed right down from coming off the motorway it seemed to be alright again. But I didn't try testing it because I didn't want to breakdown completely so it may have been my imagination. But when I took it to the garage that afternoon it seemed fine and the garage test drove it and it seemed fine. Not sure if this will only be for a while.

Also don't know how to find out if I have a ZF or GM gearbox - checked manual but can't see it anywhere. However, the manual did say under fluids the gearbox "filled for life" which is interesting with the number of threads saying check fluids.

I had an 04 TD6 as soon as it hit 80,000 miles it played up
the gearbox was the first thing to go, it developed what can only be explaind as a very slight missfire feeling when the car was crusing, then it started to go i would be driving along and one day i stopped at some lights when i went to pull away NOTHING the car just sat there? i turned it off and on again and the car ran fine for a while then it woud do it while i was driving along?
im lucky enough to have a member of the family who is a seniour tech guy at land rover and i called him told him about the missfire feeling, i didnt get chance to get the rest out and he told me "gearbox on the way out"
he said it might go today, tomorrow, next month but its going, he explaing that the gears where breaking down and as the bits where in the oil they would block the filters and cause other gears to break, stopping the engine turned the gearbox pumps off and the bits off broken gears would fall to the bottom of the oil? but its just time before they find there way back into the pump and filters? i managed to get a recon one done cost 3k but at a dealers 7k+ for a new one i was also told that they are a sealed gearbox ? hope this helps :(

the one last point i forgot was it took about 3 months for the the gearbox to pack and not move again. i

Ouch - thanks Steve, sounds like I may need to be looking at another gearbox :(
Difficulty now is whether I get oil changed quickly will mean I get a bit longer out of it or if is likely to leave me somewhere stranded sometime soon!

If the box does go suddenly can you switch to low range gears to get you home - or doesn't it work like that?

no mate it didn't work like that on mine, i was told and please someone correct me if its wrong? each gear is in its own chamber with the oil flowing from chamber to chamber, one gear goes then it blocks the feed to the next chamber stopping the oil getting to the gears, so then the next gear breaks down and so on until the car stops, mine gave up 3 months after it had the misfire feeling at cruising, my car had only done 80k then when the turbo went it had done 84k then the last straw was the fuel pumps and injectors at 88k my brother in-law had an 03 td6 and he had the gearbox go his went at 92k? so there's a design fault can i asks where about in the uk you are?

I'm in South East - Kent/East Suusex boarder.

I've just done over £103k so far but the motor had £97k on it when I bought it.

Can someone help please? If my gearbox oil is low and the filter possibly blocked in my 1996 diesel Range will it cause a lack of acceleration and will it leak out from anywhere onto my drive like it just has?
