I know what you mean, despite my numptyness with electrics i'm good with a spanner, i've seen people try to time engines up 180 degrees out before ;) i timed it up before removal so it's definately still in the right place. probably one of the other million things i've fiddled with that's the problem now.. throttle disc more than likely!
wish i had more time to put into it, i was asked if i wanted to go laning today, well ****ed i couldn't go  don't think my mk1 golf would do very well:D

errrm, it was til i started doing the basingstoke lanes
It's well solid and polishes up pretty well but i do like to enjoy it's off road abilities :)
After i'd rebuilt it i was considering blowing a new coat of colour over it as some of the panels didn't quite match as they had come from 3 different cars to get good panels. Maybe i'll do it once i've got the laning bug outa me system, o rwhen i can afford a shaggy disco to abuse :D

It's up an running!! base idle was fekkin miles out, she sounds well sweet at idle gonna go for a raz round the block and see what happens
If you don't hear back from me it's probably not gone so well :D

I'm still alive.. :D
Well, it's driving better than it has done for a long time, hard to tell if it will play up when really hot again for now but idling between 2nd and 3rd lines on rev counter now, pulls well and no sign of a misfire as yet!
It's still a mystery though as i have no idea what has made things better
Changing the bits in the alternator helped big time, went fom putting out 12.8v i think it was, now puting out 14.5v!
Shame i've spent so much money on it i can't afford to put any petrol in it this month now  and the lpg guage has now decided to give up the ghost so i have no idea how much gas i have! bloody never ending int it!

It really is never ending matey , I know the pain in the wallet too-really bad!

When you say the 2/3 line how many revs do you reckon that is? I think mine still a bit low but I can get it higher.

Hopefully kev or someone else wise will pick it up and answer but i'm guessing about 700 rpm? i Havent got an rpm meter i can use at the mo. i agree it is still a touch low, it was a tad higher while i set the base idle, as soon as i put the vac pipe to the stepper motor back on the revs dropped a bit  I'm wondering if it's still playing up, if i hold the revs in neutral at anywhere between 1500-2200 rpm for say 8 seconds or more the idle initially drops to 1500rpm, stays there for a good 15 seconds before the stepper kicks in and drops the idle down. Try it on yours, let me know if i'm being dim again :D
Happy enough for now tho, i was hoping with all the work it would fly along, it doesn't but at least it seems ok, today....

Big thanks to everyone who has pitched in with help and ideas ;)

Sounds about right. Idle should be 725rpm +/- 25 rpm.
The idle speed holding up for a few seconds is normal, the delay is caused by the ECU pulsing the stepper motor which moves in steps (really!!) to control idle speed so what happens is the stepper moves a bit the ECU then checks speed then adjusts again etc until the required idle speed is reached.

Getting your alternator sorted will have made a big difference, I have experienced running problems because of weak alternator.

glad to hear it is at least running again, should be easy enough to fine tune it from there.

Dont use mine a bench mark as its still idling too low, Stuart couldnt figure it out!

But at least they are both working, my fuel consumption is normal and if it snows we are both set!

Yeh, looking more hopeful now, thanks for your knowledge and patience Kev! i'm sure there is still more to do, started it from cold tonight and it's still taking longer to fire than it really should, could well be injector related but i'm not touching them this week!

For what it is worth, I have found the best way to start the Rangie is to turn the ignition on, listen for 3 relays - main ECU power relay, fuel pump relay and I think the other is the main ABS power relay then flick the key to turn the engine over. Don't ask me why but it definately seems to work better doing it that way.

Cheers for the tip Kev ;) but tried that, my abs pump always runs when i turn ignition on so i often wait til it's stopped before i turn the key, makes no odds. Thing is it always used to start as soon as i touched the key before the misfire came along.. When i'm feeling brave i'll investigte further but i'd like to get it out for a long run as it is for now and see how she behaves before going any further :)

owdoo, might sound daft but, if you run LPG, change the LpG filter (fitted before the vapouriser under the bonnet). Is vapouriser in good nick? Had many probs with my BiGas system but sorted it out by swapping these for less than £100.

myn does exactly the same thing, check all electronic parts related to ignition apart from sensors and injectors, i found there was no seal between my plenum and inlet manifold.. duno it its fixed it yet as its off the road atm. but will update!
