Thanks SH, was just about finished. New clutch, props, swivels, bearings............

If it's a write off, depending on the price I'll try and get it back and sell the recently fitted bits on, if they can't be fitted to another.

The assessor will make a judgement by tomorrow lunch time.....

Dont just roll over with the insurance company. They'll try to quote book prices but if you've replaced tons of parts then you want what you want. My 98 Defender has a new engine that cost me nearly £5 grand so I'd want book price PLUS the cost of the engine if mine was hit. If they wont play ball tell them to source a replacement like for like with similar mileage etc and bring it to you for approval. You dont have to accept the first motor they offer. Tell them you dont have the time or money to run around looking at small ads and taking test drives and that they can provide you with a suitable courtesy car (not some poxy Nissan Micra) while they take their sweet time doing it. Worked for me. They gave me almost twice the book price ( to cover my time and expenses to look for a new car) on my 51 plate Volvo because it was cheaper and less hassle for them and as their driver hit my parked motor there was no argument as to who's liability it was. Dont forget that you dont have to accept their write off decision. Its your motor and you want it sorted they can not insist that it is written off. Its their problem not yours. Also mention that if they dont sort it quickly you'll be taking the driver and the van owners to court to get your money in a private prosecution. They wont like that as they can be held in breach of contract by the other party who have paid for cover. There is plenty of stuff on the internet regarding how to handle these shysters especially through the small claims courts. Good luck.

thats not a real write off only in surance eyes , because they have to put on proper replacement parts and the labour of a insurance approaved garage, buy it back sling a chain around a big treeattach it at point of impact put it in first with a bit of slack chain floor it prob sorted.....

I want to know how she managed to hit your wagon she obviously wasnt looking, hope you get it sorted

Ex squeeze me.....but why do you think its a write off?? Rear x member and some spit and polish...

Update:

Having been in touch with the repair centre this morning they have said that the wagon is probably beyond economical repair, but we'll need to wait for the final inspection.

Board as *&^% this weekend with no wagon to rag around in or repair.

Well the hire company has delivered us a brand new v6 discovery to play with until the outcome of the wagon is decided. I'm a bit worried that I might scratch it though - boll"$s it's on someone elses insurance!

Being a 1988, to the insurance company, who I will guarentee know sod all about Landrovers, it will almost certainly be an "economic" write off. What they will try to do is write off the vehicle and then sell it through the "trade" or they might let you buy it back.
DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES allow them to go down this route or you might lose your Landy or end up with a recorded right off.
It's your Landy not theirs and you are the injured party. insist that they make you a cash offer to settle your claim for damages to your vehicle based on a repair estimate and up to the true (your) valuation of the vehicle. Whatever their first offer is turn it down and stick to your guns. They will settle on a realistic figure eventually.

Thanks waldershelf - the inspection centre has said that it will cost £5.5k to repair!!!!!
New chassis, gearbox plus other bits.

Now I'm worried that I'll be out of pocket - it had new doors, bulkhead etc etc

When my Range Rover got rear ended they wrote that off, they gave me a cheque for it's value and kept £200 back to cover the scrap value and said I could keep it. It worked out really well as I was selling it anyway and got more than I was going to put it up for!

you cant let em write that off! there is only a weekends work there! new x member and a hammer and its sorted! spesh seen as you has all the new parts on!

As I said dont just roll over. Its their problem not yours. Tell them you want it fixed or replaced and you want it done in a timely fashion. Its not their decision to write it off as it belongs to you. They can only do so if you agree. Also tell then that you dont have the time or inclination to go searching around for replacement vehicles - this means the easiest option for them is to repair your vehicle. If you have fully comp insurance or have paid extra for legal cover instruct your insurance company to issue recovery proceedings against the driver and the owners of the van as well as their insurance company. Nobody says that you have to claim from the other party's insurance. You are fully entitled to claim against the driver or the owner or both. You'll be surprised at how quickly it focuses their minds on the fact that you are the innocent party and have legal redress. There is no argument as to liability so any costs you incur can also be recovered. At the end of the whole thing you should not expect to be out of pocket in terms of time or money. Trust me it worked for me you just have to be a bit hard nosed about things. Dont do anything to make it easier for them. YOU ARE THE VICTIM IN THIS CASE! and dont forget it.
